RE: Cassier hwy 37

I was on it 3 weeks ago and it was in good shape. Some heaves just south of Dease Lake (Gnat Pass) and just south of the Alaska Highway Junction but there's been more paving, notably the Burrage River hill. Fuel isn't common but not bad unless you have a very short range - fueling at Iskut and Bell II is enough for most folks.

RE: Top of the world highway

I wish that the Alaska Highway still looked like the Top of the World. The freeway that is the Alcan now just has no character - the ToW has LOTS of character!! :)

RE: Top of the world highway

In my 100+ crossings in 40-42 foot MCIs between 1990 and 2007 I saw a total of 3 rigs over the edge - a TT that cut a corner too sharp, a Class A that cut the same corner too sharp, and another A that may have tried to give an oncoming vehicle more room than it needed. It's an incredible drive and I'll be going up again as soon as I can spare the time.

There are enough errors in that Q&A to make it overall useless.

RE: Alberta Highway 40

I went south on Hwy 40 two weeks ago and it was in excellent condition, with surprisingly little commercial traffic compared to other times.

And no..you won't find many opportunities out west to visit an "injun smoke shop". Like...none.
Not so - my half-Indian sister buys her smokes dirt cheap at an Indian shop in Kelowna.

I don't know the technical details but we have satellite TV pretty much everywhere in Canada. There are lots of local TV stations as well.

RE: Article: Fraser Valley campers face long weekend crackdown

You mean they are enforcing the rules and regs. So what's the surprise?
The surprise is that enforcement is new - and long overdue. There was a LOT of radar on the highway over the weekend as well. I'm in Vancouver, heading to Whistler for 4 days this morning, then back to Whitehorse via the Stewart-Cassiar.

RE: Border inspection

Well what do you expect when you are entering into a socialist country. If it was me I would of said no thanks and turn my butt around. That's the difference between socialism and freedom. Oh and skip as far as coming back I am not willing to give up my rights and freedom for protectionism pushed upon this nation in the name of change (socialism). I could go on but God help us when our individual rights are stepped upon by a socialist gov't that says they are protecting us, from what ourselves and our ignorance what freedom is really all about. Thank you, Craig
In case anybody here wondered whether the legendary "ugly American" still exists, there's your answer. Luckily it appears to be an endangered species....

You do have a choice actually - you can make a U-turn. If you choose to continue, they can do whatever they want.

RE: Alaska RVing?

I'm in Calgary right now, having just driven down from Whitehorse. Here's the actual count of vehicles that I met in a typical hour, recorded on May 7th between 11:15 and 12:15 as I was southbound north of Watson Lake (so these vehicles were northbound):
private cars, pickups etc: 13
RVs of all types: 6
Tractor-trailer rigs: 6
Other commercial: 2

RE: 2009 Alaska Trip Blogs

I just drove from Whitehorse to Calgary via the Alaska Highway and Icefields Parkway over the past 3 days. By May 26 I'll be back in Whitehorse via the Stewart-Cassiar. Lots of photos are being posted on my blog at http://www.explorenorth.com/wordpress/.
The weather has been pretty rough so far but the highway is in good shape except for about 20 miles south of Teslin where there are some really nasty pavement breaks.

RE: Great Alaska Tour savings book

Obviously I don't know your tourism interests, but I'd think if you are going to be in Alaska two months you'd find at least one thing to do that's offered by Tour Saver. Likely that one thing will save you the cost of buying it. At least it did for us. Not familiar with Northern Lights, but will research it for our trip back this summer. We'll likely buy the Tour Saver again. For us, the Tour Saver is a no-brainer!
There are a few ways to save money in and on the way to Alaska this year, from Toursaver and Northern Lights to the Tourism Department's discount page - they're all listed at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/discounts.html
