RE: Making Ends Meet

I've already got a real job, a stick house and an RV. But I want to travel and find a way to support us on the road. There's not much point in just quitting this job and finding another in a different location. Trading one job for another. I might as well stay put until retirement.
My Grandpa had a bit of wisdom; "our Wants are very large while our needs are very small". Everyone wants something, in your case more travel. The good news you are thinking of how can I fund this Want before you strike out, attaboy. If you cannot fund the Want then delaying the decision until the funding is there maybe the best choice.

RE: Improving gas mileage

Fuel is one of the smallest costs of owning and using a motorhome. Obsessing over a couple of miles per gallon to me is just a waste of effort.
Jim
Fuel is also one of the few costs over which you have a significant amount of control. I like getting the advice.
Fully agree....More miles more control, savings will depend on the amount of miles you drive the RV.

RE: Converting to residential fridge

I might suggest this one as an alternative. Runs on 120 via and inverter and is very efficient use of power. Some off road RV manufacturers are switching to this type of refrigerator.

RE: Making reservations

We make plans for number of days, attractions, driving routes, then make RV reservations at the major attractions, and areas we feel may require an advanced reservation. The rest we plan a day or two ahead as we move from place to place. Making advanced reservations online or over the phone gives you an idea of the number of available spots in an area thus allowing you to make changes in routes or travel plans if necessary.

RE: close my eyes

They talk about change in weather, well here in Oregon spring has arrived. We have flowering trees in full bloom, flowers coming to life, and the grass is growing like crazy. Spring has arrived out here. I remember when middle of May the grass started to grow and the 'spring flowers' were actually spring flowers.
Want spring come to Oregon we seem to be a bit early this year.
By the way, Go USA, a tongue in cheek to the Canadian sports fans.

RE: ? Internet browsers

I am using Chrome by Google and it works very nice. Also has some very good spam phishing built right into the the browser. Firefox and Safari work well also.

RE: Linux Operating System

IMO I would stay mainstream. If you want a Unix operating system buy a Mac or as many have said stay with Windows 7. Lots of things go thump in the night once you get very far from the mainstream computing environment.
I would stay with Windows 7.

RE: Itasca Navion IQ 24DL

We looked at these units and for us the sleeping was an issue. Climbing up and down that ladder, did you try it without shoes, was more then either one of us wanted to do. The bed was just full size if you went with that floor plan or you had to make up the bed everyday. Some do not mind doing the bed everyday but for us it was an issue. The size of the dinette and couch beds rather limited in space so we felt that two beds would need to be made up every night, unless one wanted to do the ladder.
I had the pleasure of chatting with several owners and the bed was the issue in every case when a negative was brought up. Everyone that I chatted with used the overhead bed for storage and either made up the couch or squeezed into the double bed in the back.
Other then sleeping we liked the unit, and those that we had the pleasure of asking questions generally were very positive with the noted sleeping arrangements. The large slide was a most appreciated when no bed in back, made for a very nice large area again from an owner.
Really comes down to what your needs are as all RV's have compromises.

RE: Reese dual cam or Equalizer sway control?

If you can add the Reese cams to your existing hitch then that is the way to go. Many WD hitches can be modified, less then $200, with the cams. I would contact Reese for further information.
If not then I would look at the Equal-i-zer as it does a very good job and from our experience is a hundred or so less expensive then the full Reese system, essentially doing the same job.
Both have good warrantes, either one will do a good job.

RE: NRA Sticker on Motorhome

The sticker would advertise that there may be a gun in the MH. That may intice someone to break in while you are away such as in a restraunt or on a sight seeing trip. I would not put that decal on my MH.
I agree and do not enter Canada with that sticker. The MH will get a thorough going through almost guaranteed. Good news, you might find things you have been missing for sometime :)

RE: Do you think the RV market will ever get back on track?

I guess you might want to define RV's. If one means motorhomes then IMO this market will continue to suffer for a couple of reasons. The main one is easy financing, remember the home equity loan, well the banks are still and for the foreseeable future not wanting to make reasonable downpayment loans on a depreciating asset especially with six figures for the asset. Therefore, the policy will keep the fringe buyers of motorhomes out of the market thus depressing sales.
The towable market will come back fast for several reasons. They are cost effective, and new technologies are making them more attractive. Bigger slides, composite materials, and less weight to size ratio. Plus the motorhomes had a very big advantage in size, quality, comfort features for many years, now the towable RV's are boasting many of the unique features once exclusive to the motorhome RV's.
Overall the RV business will grow and come back but the motorhome may take longer if ever returning to the good days.

RE: Apple iPad

I like it especially us who travel, want a way to access e-mail and the web, and require a screen that is bigger then what any of the smart phones offer. A phone that is just a phone plus an iPad, 3g pay as you go (when traveling) wifi access (Coffee house and RV park) I can see some cost reductions with the upside as noted you can actually read the display. The book reader is very attractive application then add very low cost apps (a very large number of them) you have a nice traveling package.
Will iPad replace the home system? Not for me.
Time will tell if the iPad is a success or an also ran. I am betting on success with a thumbs up.

RE: Mirror extensions??

We bought these for our old pick up and there were great. My DW didn't like how shaky the strap on ones were.
http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/cipa-slip-on-tow-mirrors/7753d
These work fine for us, no problems with shaking. One thing not to use is any mirror that has braces between window and molding. Puts too much pressure on motor mechanics if you have power windows. Per GMC and some experience as we had a set of these left over from another time.

RE: Strategies for improving fuel economy

The best strategy for increasing mileage is very simple: Drive Slower.
55mph saves alot of gas compared to 70mph.
All things we have tried this works the best for us, keep it below 60 mph.

RE: Off the shelf tires can be out dated.

A good piece of information to check when buying or checking your RV and vehicle tires. six year rule sounds about right. Most passenger vehicles tires wear out before six years but if you purchase ones that are already that old or have several years on them then you may fall into an unfortunate situation.
Thanks

RE: 500% Increase in DMV fees

Declining revenues, increased costs, required balanced budgets, means creative tax and or fees for states. I do not think it is fair to blame anyone group because you could just as easily blame us retired folks because many state troubles are amplified by liberal retirement packages. Again that would not be fair to point out these folks either as the problems are more wide spread then simple finger pointing. Solutions are difficult as seen by the many views expressed in this thread. Hopefully we can get back on track, learn from this lesson, and make better decisions as we pass the control to the next generation.
