RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Update Finally got new info on coach. Isn't the turbo, validated isn't the alternator. Current suspicion is a pinhole leak in the charge air cooler. They are frustrated that they can't pinpoint it but are plugging away. I'm not sure what's next, but will post the continuing saga.... Paul

RE: Mount for Webber Baby Q / Q100 / Q120?

As I remember the "Q's" use high pressure gas and the line you have is low pressure. That is it comes in from the low pressure side of the regulator. So No you cannot use it that way. Remove the regulator from the Weber and install a quick disconnect. Then you can hook it up to your trailer gas line. I installed quick disconnects on the Weber regulator too so that I can put it back onto the BBQ and run it off a propane tank. Our RVQ 2 comes with a small regulator, similar in size to the Q. With a quick connect to the BabyQ, do you have to bypass the regulator on the BabyQ? On ours it seems like the regulator and the adjustment knob are all one piece, that looks difficult to remove.

Oxygenics on sale

Many folks have posted positive reviews of the Oxygenics shower head. Ours is amazing and has made a huge difference in our shower. They are a bit expensive, though, and I've not seen them on sale. Got an email this AM from RichardSolo, owned by former owner of Sharper image. They have an excellent sale going on for what looks to be a good shower head...40% off. This is not the same one as we purchased, but looks better. However, you may want to be sure that it will work in your rig. Here's the link. Solo Oxygenics Paul

RE: New coffee Maker what brand coffee

I guess I'm nuts, but my daughter got a Keurig for Christmas and every cup I drink tastes like instant to me. I have tried 4-5 different blends and they all taste like instant. Anyone else have this problem? Maybe my taster is shot. Buy the bolder style and use a little less water. If you like strong coffee, some of the blends are too weak. We like ours strong and found emeril bold and newmans bold to be the best. Still don't match up to a good quality, just ground, just brewed cup, but great for the motorhome. At home we burr grind our beans and use a machine we bought from Starbucks (that they were very proud of, BTW), but the coffee is excellent...

RE: New coffee Maker what brand coffee

For those of you who LOVE coffee as we do, the absolute best coffee we have ever had is from a small company called coffee-tea-etc www.coffee-tea-etc.com They directly source from the growers, have great coffee and are very nice to deal with. Definitely more expensive than many, but whenever we have guests, they always comment on the coffee and ask for the web address. Wish they made K-cups....

RE: New coffee Maker what brand coffee

This is the perfect unit for a MH. We love ours. Newmans and Emiril Bold are the best for us. Can use whatever coffee you want with the K-cup filter. However, it's easy to get lazy and just pop one in that's pre-made.

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Unfortunately I was not at the shop while they were testing; He (Service Mgr) mentioned cutting off the air supply, or disconnecting a hose, so that sounds like what they did. I don't know if they rev'ed in neutral. Seems like there were several people involved and the more senior person had doubts about the diagnosis and kept sending them back for more info. FYI: There is only normal engine engine noise until the turbo pressure comes up, but I'm seeing that this is also coincident with RPM rise. 1800 RPM's, no turbo, normal noise 1600 RPM, 12.5 PSI Turbo, normal noise, slight turbo noise 2500 RPM, 24.9 PSI Turbo, loud hissing So I guess it could be RPM's....But... Fortunately I have about a dozen screen shots of noise/no noise at various RPM and Turbo boost levels. I never have tried to rev in neutral above 1100, so I don't know if it would show up then. “Curiouser and curiouser!” I've attached a few more screen shots; No extra noise http://i47.tinypic.com/11w7edx.jpg Loud noise: http://i45.tinypic.com/2w50sbk.jpg Wish I had thought to record the sound...no mistaking that it is not normal and it definitely attracts attention. BTW, Kicks in with the Retarder as well, which was my first thought of where the problem was. But of course, RPM's raise here as well. Y'all might get a kick out of this, but as soon as I hang up the phone, my wife says...."Check it out with the folks on forum...they'll know"....and she's right. This is such a FANTASTIC place. Appreciate everyone's efforts and sharing.

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Update.... The CAT shop worked on this for several days and Thought it wasthe turbo. They had the new part there and before they completely broke things down, they "took the turbo out of the equation" in some way, to be sure and still had the noise. They clearly heard the noise at higher RPM's... Then they took the belts off the Alternator and the noise went away. All very strange to me...does this make sense? They have had the coach since Monday PM, and have updated me regularly on what they were doing. Though this is not a CAT issue, it fortunately seems to be covered in my extended warranty from Assurant. Anyone ever heard of something like this?

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

This is still in flux as there is some disagreement in the diagnosis at the shop..... I hope to hear more later today. No question that it's making a racket...but interestingly, driving in my car yesterday I was passed by a diesel 18 wheeler that was making the same sound, only louder. and he barreled by me at about 85. The Oil temp isn't captured on my rig or VMSPC, just pressure. The particular screen print I used that day was "lotsa gauges" one that I use to show just about everything. My usual screen captures about 5 items and co-exists with Microsoft Streets and trips. The engine is an ACERT, and as far as I know only one turbo. Oil and filters have been changed 3 times, one time by my dealer, 6 months ago, and the levels checked and verified by CAT shortly after. Seems to have a few folks scratching their heads. CAT understands that I expect this to be warranty and will not perform work without OK. So we wait....

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Paul, also an excellent post. If this information was available before my original post, I would have responded very differently. With this post you have demonstrated that you are participating in the service of your vehicle to an extent greater than I have ever seen from an individual. ............ You do not want to go into the service center to pick up your vehicle and be surprised with a big bill for it will be more difficult to reverse things at this point. Thanks so much for your post. You are right that the time to discuss is not after they have torn apart the engine. Things are still "in flux" and more info will be available in the AM.

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Brett, Excellent post. For those of you wanting more particulars on this situation. -19,000 miles on coach -Second owner as of July 2009 -Previous owner, longtime owner of Class A's, owner of construction company with multiple diesel vehicles. Spoke directly with him, he kept meticulous records of oil changes and other maintenance. -At purchase, coach was "refreshed" by Tom Johnson; all filters, all fluids, changed/checked -August 4th,2009 current owner brought to CAT for complete "inspection", intercooler and radiator clean, Fluid re-check and validation, coolant check and validation, Test drive. Asked about "turbo noise", was told it was completely normal. Passed all areas completely. "you have an excellent coach, sir, in excellent shape, well maintained" -Though this step may seem unnecessary, I wanted to be sure that the dealer did all that was expected and needed. The several hundred dollars I spent gave me peace of mind. -Coach brought in for window replacement to selling dealer, asked dealer to review fluids, and another check of major systems. Asked about turbo "whistling noise". Was told some exhaust clamps a little loose, tightened up, reduced whistling. Spent an hour for labor to gain more peace of mind. -When turbo noise increased, coach brought in for service immediately, driven only to get to facility. So how do I drive this coach? Always warm it up before moving, in fact, use exact method described by Brett. I purchased VMSPC and watch all temps, pressures carefully, and even have alarms that go off when pressures, temps and road speeds exceed standard levels. -I periodically print the screen of VMSPC and review the details later on. Nothing has ever been out of standard. The coach is never shut down immediately, at rest areas or other, and let it run approximately 5 minutes each time. I may be new at this, but am not irresponsible. I have invested many hours on this forum, have researched the right things to do before doing anything, have asked many experienced users for help and guidance, and am ultra-careful in what I do to and with the coach. The several hours a day spent on this and other forums have provided me with much information and again I thank those who give freely of their time. This problem is not self inflicted, is not the result of abuse, and it's difficult for me to see how much more preventive maintenance and review could have been done. I will post the results as they happen.

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

I have no greater respect for anyone on the forum than Brett. He is always there with good, factual info. So will put this to bed for a few days. The purpose of the original post was simply to get some advice from those more experienced folks and it devolved a bit into something else. The goal is still the same, to get advice, in a friendly and helpful fashion. Got some good thoughts and ideas from the exchange and I'll post the results of my experience for those interested. I expect it to be a happy ending, but I'm perhaps naive. CAT is a great company, my servicing dealer is reputable and I'm optimistic that they will do the right thing. But if not, this will be a longer saga, that will still end up with the right thing being done.

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I was hoping that your tone was unintended and it looks like that was the case. As for "talking from my wallet rather than logic"... again you could chose better words to be a bit less offensive. But I am thinking that your heart is in the right place, but your "post editor" function could use a bit more work. You are right about being an involved participant...could not agree more. I don't know what happened to your original post and the subsequent replies, but they seem to be gone. It sounded to me, and some others, that perhaps you were jumping to a conclusion that the problem was created by the owner, rather than being a true warranty issue. I am not a shrinking violet and will not stand for being taken advantage of by the CAT shop, CAT, the selling dealer, or the warranty company that is providing wrap coverage. I am resolute that I will not pay for a problem that was not of my making. So if one of your points is research, be involved, and don't take things at face value, I agree. Though it wasn't completely clear in your original post, I think you are really trying to help and I thank you for that.

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

The CAC looks like a radiator, and usually sits in front of the coolant radiator. The charge air coming from the turbo's outlet runs thru a tube into the CAC. The other side has a couple of .... If it's in a 'Cat house' I'm sure they'll figure out what happened and/or check for things other than just looking at the croaked turbo itself. Now this is HELPFUL info..appreciate the insight... The noise was louder outside. The good news, from my perspective is that the dealer and the CAT dealer doing the work, gave the rig a clean bill of health less than 6 months ago, did all the maintenance and seem to "own" the problem. Lots of opportuntities to learn about new things here. The amount of knowledge and willingness to share is just amazing.

RE: Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Turbo failure is quite unusual. Did they tell you the cause of the failure? Was it the bearings, exhaust turbine blades, intake turbine blades, etc? Actually, any pieces of turbo blade (assuming the INTAKE side turbine lost any vanes) would be "filtered out" by the CAC. So indeed, if the intake side turbine failed, they could clean the CAC. If the engine did not have a CAC, indeed you would have to check the engine itself IF the intake turbine blades were ingested. ======================= They were a little vague and said they'd get back to me. I didn't want to push too hard, since they ordered the part(s) and were friendly..... I'm not sure I know what a CAC is, but I'll ask them. The turbo was running, and showed pressure of 20.6 PSI when I started hearing the whine. (VMSPC...I screen printed it each time I heard it and brought it to the CAT shop. Narrowed things down a bit) So I think it's still intact and probably ready to break apart. For once, it seems, I didn't wait "just a little while longer". We just came off of a 2000 mile trip and everything was great until we were almost home, though I did point out to the RV dealer and CAT last June that I thought the turbo was a little loud. But since I don't have much experience, I was easily convinced it was OK.... and it probably was. But this time there was not mistaking it...normal sound without turbo...high pitched whine that caused people to turn their heads when the turbo kicked in. Fortunately, I only have gone about 30 miles since it started to get pretty loud. My experience with this shop so far, Blanchard, has been very good. I am sure that this is unrelated (newbie alert..) but my rear air pressure has suddenly gotten lower, at about the same time as the turbo...coincidence? I can't tell you how great this forum is for people like us. You folks are so helpful and willing to share! Thanks so much!

Turbo dead on 2006 C7 CAT

Just got word from the shop that the turbo needs to be replaced in my 2006 CAT C7. It started making louder and louder noises when the turbo boost kicked in, but didn't seem to make any difference in performance (that I could tell) Fortunately this engine is still under warranty, so there hopefully will be no cost.Should I expect that all labor and parts will be covered. Curious if anyone has had this experience and if there is anything that I should be sure is done during the process. Also, wondering since they have the "patient open" is there anything else I should have them work on? The engine has only 19K miles on it. Glad I'm not paying for it as I suspect it won't be cheap..... Thanks Paul
