"The secret is not to become an older American. Stay vertical, keep RVn The human body was around a long time before the drug companies. The goal of taking meds is to correct an abnormal condition. Gasbag, When someone tells me to "think outside the box", I automatically shift to "conventional wisdom" mode. "Isn't that too cool" lol

RE: Whacha readin' now?

"Twilight in the Desert" - Matthew Simmons - Boy does he repeat himself. Interesting topic, but I think the 1st 100 pages could have been done in 75. "Kon-Tiki" - Thor Heyerdahl I read it 40+ years ago, but love a good true life adventure.

RE: RV pad at house???

If you plow or snow blow the pad, avoid crushed stone. I chose gravel over concrete or asphalt for drainage reasons. The pad is beside the garage and only a few feet from property line. Any impervious material may adversely impact the neighbor's lawn and gardens. BTW, many nicer rv parks/resorts use concrete for good reason. You'll also notice concrete selected over asphalt at fueling islands.

RE: How many of you drive a semi and full time?

stonefamily - been there, done that, shared the experience, offered some very constructive good advice, and provided a reource for further investigation. I re-read my post, and find nothing critical. I wish u well..

RE: Advice Needed on Tree Vs. Neighbor

I've enjoyed reading this one. We're from the Pine Tree State, so they are everywhere, and they are messy !! They are commonly planted along property lines here in Maine. Like any plant or other tree they provide far more benefit to man than detriment. Some very important benefits we take for granted are their contributions to air quality, erosion control, sound absorption and shelter. Trees work for us, and ask little in return. A few hours a year is little work when considering the benefits they provide. I'd avoid destroying one for the reasons heretofore listed.

RE: How many of you drive a semi and full time?

stonefamily, I got my CDL-A just before turning 55. I did the driving school, and signed on with a national common carrier for additional training and experience doing OTR. I did 8 months in 2007, the last 5 of which was a 7 days on/7 days off schedule, which I really enjoyed. I will NOT, do NOT drive mid-December to April. As others have mentioned, experience helps for landing jobs. Last year, I drove part-time for a local door, window & millwork outfit delivering to construction sites throughout New England. I just finished working for the Census bureau, and cover vacations for the door company drivers. I also on occasion operate a large dump truck, which MAY be the best place for a NOOB driver/fulltimer to start. Lots of road work in the pipeline now. My POV was, and remains similar to yours, part-time seasonal work is just right. I must tell you though, training is VERY important and invaluable. In retrospect, the 3 weeks I spent with a trainer 24/7 was priceless. I shudder to think of a NOOB walking out of DOT with a fresh license trying to operate a big rig without benefit of second seating.. Be careful of what you get yourself into. I believe links are a no-no, but --thetruckersreport.com is one of many messageboards you may find interesting. Best wishes !!!!

RE: Just completed census contract

summutt, I just finished as well and it was a great 10 week project. I worked as a CLA in QC. I especially enjoyed the variety of work my position afforded. I look forward to returning in the fall for the OLQ canvassing. It's my understanding that OLQ will only be 4-6 weeks. Happy to hear you finished and that it went well for you. I did a follow up to the original post a few weeks ago.

RE: Debit or Credit Card, Travelers Cks or Cash ?

Hokeypokey, Four years ago we traveled from Maine to Alaska with our fiver. I recall not being able to use our debit card at the Wal-Mart in Whitehorse,Yukon. It was really no inconvenience, as we also had credit cards. We did encounter a temporary problem with our Capital One credit card on our way home. Oddly enough this occurence was also in Whitehorse, Yukon. When I went to pay for fuel, I was informed that Capital One would not authorize payment. To make a long story short, when I called Capital One, I was informed that security had frozen our account. There were too many suspicious charges in out of the way places. I laughed at that one, because we had been gone for over 2 months and been using the card almost daily. We had our mail forwarded while traveling so all bills were current. The service station attendant told me that this had happened to a few other customers. The Capital One rep advised me to notify them were I ever to be traveling for an extended period again. I wish....I'd go again in a heartbeat.....:) On a side note, take your time getting to Alaska. The journey is as much fun as the destination. Take a few photos for folks standing under the gateway in Dawson Creek. Stop and play at Liard Hot Springs. Take time to reflect at the Signpost Forest. Stewart and Hyder (though a side trip) offer fantastic bear watching, and the opportunity to look down on Salmon Glacier. I could go on and on and on. Have fun, there is no end to the interesting stops along the way.

RE: Alternitives to conventional health insurance

There is endless talk of the need for health care reform and IMO, the kind of reform we're in need of begins with the patient/consumer. I'm not a Scientologist, yet tend to align with their beliefs that healthcare is overconsumed right along with everything else in our country. The former CEO of Wal-Mart,Lee Scott said it best,"Americans are very poor consumers of healthcare". Inasmuch that I/we agree with the aforementioned beliefs, catastrophic coverage is our choice. We will not pay out 12-14 hundred a month to support a health care system that we feel is overused and abused by excess/needless consumption of John and Jane Q. Public. Unfortunately Maine has only 2 choices for healthcare coverage, and our catastrophic policy just passed the 1000 dollar premium mark for 3 months of coverage. It's likely that within a few years, we'll be in Maine for less than 6 months of the year. Hopefully we'll improve our choices for coverage by selecting a state with more reasonable premiums in the not to distant future.

RE: 2010 census work

summutt, Have you finished up in your area? We should finish up QC in our area within the next 2-3 weeks. I've enjoyed working as a CLA, but am now spending more time doing AA's. After a few weeks, I found the listers I worked with to be doing fine, so I don't physically visit with them as much. 700 miles and 35-40 hours/week. I'm considering doing OLQ canvassing when that starts up, supposedly this summer. In order to enjoy the limited good summer weather here in Maine, I'll probably limit myself to 20-25 hrs on that project. I hope all went well for you..:)

Summutt 2002 Happy to hear about your experience and hope it works well for you. I was hired for quality control (review three percent) and start training on April 13th. It sounds as though you will have considerable wheel time in a remote area. Good Luck !!

RE: Just took in 2 Granddaughters - HELP!!

superflatz, You and the Mrs. are Saints. We're a bit older and have 2 grand-daughters (2+4) a few days & nights a week.(typical sad story), but fortunately the other grandparents do the same.(typical sad story better) The girls are doing pretty well, but it is very challenging for the adults. Best wishes to all of you. I pray that some respite is available to you.

RE: The Corporate Dead Horse

Sad, but I can laugh at it now. After 20+ years of ownership, I sold my business to a publicly traded company. I have no idea how I lasted another six and a half years with them, but cherish the experience in an odd sort of way.:h

RE: Hello Everyone

Hey driver, welcome to town. Lotsa good stuff here. If Full timing interests you, and health insurance is an obstacle, search the fulltimer forum. It's one of my favorite places to eavesdrop. I/we don't fulltime, but in any given year we'll spend 3-6 months in our fiver. BTW, at age 55, I got my CDL, and put in 8 months with Roehl in their 7/7 fleet. More recently P&D, prehung doors, windows and millwork throughout N.E.

RE: And then the fight started...again

Oh, how I miss The Lockhorn comics. Thanks for filling the void. A buddy recently came in to work with a black eye. What happened to you, we all asked ? Oh, the Mrs. hit me. What on earth provoked her to do such a thing as that ? She was mad 'cause I didn't get her anything for her birthday. Gee, why wouldn't you buy a birthday gift for your wife ? Well I told her, she hadn't use last year's gift, so why should I bother buying her anything this year? OMG, what did you buy her last year, we asked ? A cemetery lot.............. "That's when the fight started".

B'day gift ideas-84 yr old man

My Dad's 84th birthday is coming up and I/we are looking for ideas. In recent years we've sent Maine lobster and red hot dogs ( a few of his favorite foods) to him in St. Pete,FL, and last year bought him a few tickets to see his beloved Red Sox play the Rays. he enjoys going out for B'fast almost daily, but otherwise stays at home. I'd appreciate any suggestions for gifts. TIA
