RE: Cradlepoint 350/Verizon Usb760 removable sd card

You can't access the micro SD card with the modem in the router. I've played with the GPS from the Cradlepoint admin pages but didn't find it very useful or accurate. While connected to your router open a browser window and enter http://192.168.0.1. Enter your admin pw then when when the menu comes up you can go to Modem->GPS. If you allow popups then it will let you bring up your location in Google Maps, Yahoo Maps or Mapquest. There are also some port settings for use with other navigation software but I've never played with them.

RE: Just one more way TV controls us all

Controls us all? Hardly. I, for one, didn't watch any of the Olympics so my "flushing" was determined by bodily function, not when the TV broke for commercials!

RE: Seagate Replica External Harddrive

Virtually any external hard drive could do this (and more) given the right software. You need software that can create an "image" of the disk as opposed to simply copying files. Acronis TrueImage is one example of such software. Acronis and an external hard drive would be a more flexible, albeit, less simple solution. If you want a very simple imaging solution that only does that one function then the Seagate Replica will most likely do the job for you. If you have a single file on your hard drive that got deleted, corrupted or whatever that you needed to restore, the software that comes with this drive would not let you restore that single file but would require you to restore the entire hard drive. Any changes you made since your last backup image would be lost. This is better than losing everything but other solutions would allow you to make images AND backup files so that you could restore a single file if you needed to. It is best to make periodic backup images and also make regular backups at a greater frequency which you decide on based on how often you make changes your data and how critical your data is.

RE: Video download on my computer

Most temporary files are automatically deleted when you're through with them. You need to install the free "Real Player" which allows you to permanently save streaming videos to your hard drive. I like using RealPlayer because it will also allow you to convert the downloaded video to other formats.

RE: From LP records to...???

For the most part, the terms iPod and mp3 player are interchangeable. They are actually digital music players. IPod is Apple's line of digital music player. You can save your digital music to your computer and play it back from there or you can get a portable music player that allows you to save the music to the player and carry it with you. The players will have a certain amount of storage space, 512M, 1G, 30G, etc... The more memory, the more songs you can carry with you. Depending on a number of factors such as the length of the song, a player can hold a few dozen songs to many thousand. If you had a 30G player, it would most likely be able to store all of the music from your LPs in a device about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Many current players also allow you to store video as well. Video uses a lot more memory than music. One thing nice about digital music is tags. Tags allow you to save the name of the song, artist, album, genre, album cover art, etc... along with the song. Most players can display this info while the song is playing. When you "rip" (convert from analog to digital music) a CD, the tags are provided for you which saves you a lot of typing. However, when you "rip" an LP, you don't get the tags and need to type them in. If you don't type the tags in, you end up with names for your songs such as Track 1, Track 2, etc... I use this little program, Tunatic for help with that. It will "listen" to the song playing and then look up the song on the net and id the song title and artist's name which can then be cut and pasted into the tags for the song. It can't id every song but it does pretty good and really saves on the typing.

RE: UBUNTU

Try looking here. It assumes you are using Ubuntu 9.10 but you can search for different versions of Ubuntu if you're not using 9.10.

Millenicom Broadband Internet

We live in a rural area where DSL and cable are not available. We have tried dial-up, ISDN, Hughes and, most recently, fixed wireless. All of them are pretty terrible, either too slow or unreliable. For instance, our fixed wireless is supposed to be 1M down/256k up but we rarely see greater than 700-800k. The worst part is that our connection goes down at least once per day, sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes 2-3 hours. I looked into a 1.5M T1 line but at $347/month that was just too expensive. I have a Verizon aircard which works far better than any other method of internet access I have tried, costs me $48/month with discount (compared to $85/month for the fixed wireless). I would be perfectly happy to use it as our full-time internet access except for the 5G limit. Supposedly, we are grandfathered on the Verizon unlimited but I hear stories of people having their bandwidth restricted if they go over 5G. We've never gone over 5G on the aircard to see what would happen. If Verizon offered a true unlimited plan, even at $100/month, I would jump on it. I've heard mention of millenicom in these forums but haven't seen anything where anyone is actually using it. I went to their website and saw that they offer a 5G, 10G and an unlimited plan. Their unlimited plan, in my area, is on the Sprint network. I checked Sprint's coverage map and it shows strong data signal for my address. I decided to take a chance and ordered the unlimited plan. I had to purchase their aircard, a Novatel Ovation MC760 for $99, plus a $50 setup fee, plus my first month service which was prorated by the number of days left in March. The unlimited plan is $69.99/month which is a savings of $15/month over our fixed wireless. I got the aircard and have been using it for a couple of days now and so far I'm happy with it. It's not as fast as my Verizon card but it's faster than our fixed wireless (I've gotten as high as 1.05M downloads) and, so far, more reliable. One other thing that's nice about the millenicom plans is that there is no contract. It's month-to-month and you can quit anytime. I am happy enough that I plan to cancel our fixed wireless at the end of this month. I currently am using the Sprint card in a Cradlepoint CTR350 router but have a Cradlepoint MBR900 on order. I will keep the CTR350 and the Verizon aircard for when we travel. The Sprint aircard will remain at home in the MBR900 for our home internet access. Anybody else using millenicom and have any comments (good or bad) about it?

RE: Flash Drive Help

AZPops - Here is an article I found that has some tips on what to do if your flash drive is no longer recognized by the OS. It recommends downloading the driver from the mfr. website instead of relying on the built-in driver in the OS. You should be able to find the driver you need using this Download-wizard from the Sandisk site. The article also refers to a Vista patch that might help, don't know if you already have the patch or not.

RE: Flash Drive Help

I had the same problem...twice. After replaceing two different flash drives, I found that they weren't bad afterall. I had them mounted on their sides because there was a nice space to sit it in. After the first failed, took a couple years I think, I replaced it with a similar unit. It failed in months. Replaced and then I got to messing around with the failed units and found that if I lay them down flat on the table, they both came back to life. They obviously can't be operational in any other position. It's great that you got your drives working again but since they use flash memory it doesn't make sense that their physical orientation would make any difference. Maybe there is some metal filings or other type of conductive debris that got in there and when the drives are in a certain position the debris is shorting out something?

RE: Garmin GPS not working with laptop.

You might want to try installing Franson GPSGate. There's a 14-day free trial period so it won't cost anything to find out if it will solve your problem. I find it useful to allow GPSs with different data protocols to work by translating between the different protocols. It can setup virtual serial ports and allow more than 1 software program to share a single GPS.

RE: Time share tour for the gifts

Years ago we went with friends to Reno for the weekend. They were getting their 2 nights "free" stay at some timeshare condos. They bragged how they would never consider buying a timeshare and were going just for the free weekend. My wife and I decided to skip the sales pitch and just paid for a room at a hotel for the weekend. Our friends went to the sales pitch then ended up buying a timeshare. They had that timeshare for about 15 or 20 years before they could finally unload it - at a loss.

RE: Dum PC question...

160 gb drives are dirt cheap now- I would buy a second drive to make things easier. With hard drives there is usually a size where prices are the lowest. Anything smaller or bigger will usually cost more. You would probably have to pay more for a 160G drive today than you would for a 500G. Chris is right that drives are cheap right now so a second drive would be a good move. You could use the old drive in an external enclosure for backups.

RE: netbook running street atlas

I have an Acer netbook with Streets & Trips, Mapsource, Topo and Google Earth installed. It runs them all fine but I only use them for reference and trip planning. I used a laptop as a GPS for about 5 years then about 10 years ago bought a Garmin StreetPilot GPS and now would never consider using the laptop as a GPS while underway. The dedicated GPS is superior in just about every category you could think of with the exception of screen size. Even then, my SP7200 has a 7" screen which isn't that much smaller than a netbook's screen.

RE: Windows/system32/config missing or corrupt

You didn't say which model Gateway laptop you are having trouble with. Most newer laptops don't come with recovery CDs but have a recovery partition on the hard drive that is accessed by pressing a certain key combo at startup. I believe Gateway uses F11 during boot to access recovery partition. Your best bet to recover the pictures is an external USB adapter as others have already said. In order to recover your mom's pictures you will want to use the external adapter to attach the drive to another computer and copy off the pictures. AFTER you have recovered your mom's pics, then you can try restoring the hard drive so it will boot again. You might try calling Gateway to see if they can tell you the restore procedure. You could also check for forums or even FAQs on the Gateway site to see if you can find the information about the restore procedure. I doubt there is anything physically wrong with the hard drive. Once you get things recovered and the computer running again, you should look into backup software such as Acronis True Image so that you (or your mom) can keep things backed up. Hard drives are mechanical things and will fail at some point. Backups make those failures much easier to deal with.
