RE: SEIU: Investigates Boy Scout VOLUNTEER Trail Project

and like california has money to pay paid positions, they are broke worse than most....volunteers have long filled the gap between lean and flush years.

RE: SEIU: Investigates Boy Scout VOLUNTEER Trail Project

Well, that SEIU doesn't have any boy scouts that have ever joined their ranks?........you know an eagle project is one big deal for a scout who has worked hard to get to the point that they can attempt a eagle project. The SEIU rep. sounds like he should feel threatened by a Boy Scout. That SEIU representative needs to do the things for their members that their members are paying for, long term welfare, security and benefits. If all they can find to do is whine about an eagle project here and a project there well time for new representatives I think. Rant on! Don

RE: woprkamping Skagway,Ak

hahahaha,,,,,,,,,OK that was in reply to the part about gas and services along the way...sorry I didn't make that clear....yes, whitehorse is the main place to get things....even Haines (1 hour by boat) only has limited services. Thanks for keeping me on the ball. Safe Travels Don

RE: woprkamping Skagway,Ak

take board games......skagway is a very compact area...one road in one boat out... don't go the casiar....it has contruction that will be very muddy in the spring.....no issues with finding gas and services and even campgrounds while traveling......from seattle go up to prince george, then north to watson lake and just after watson lake and just before whitehorse turn south on the road into skagway...there are lots of safeways with gas pumps and reduced gas prices if you use your safeway card. hopefully, they will be back to giving good discounts by then... I think it kinda averaged about $4 a gallon for deisel.... gas was a little less. but prices are by the liter so get used to using a quicky conversion chart....using a credit card to pay for stuff also got you a good exchange rate and you stay away from the floating exchange rate that canadians can use. mileposts covers that part of the drive very well.....worth the investment for sure.....there is an onliune version now which saves a couple trees if that will work for you also.... PM with other questions, our Blog of our travels this last year are still up at www.pamperingcampers/blogspot.com enjoy and happy trails Don

RE: Workamping & Still do Touristy Things?

just do good DD, before you accept the job.........I have seen and heard of Jobs that want you to spend the majority of your time dedicated to you campground or position.....some positions want you to do rounds before you leave on a day off and do them again when you get back.....then you only have 6 hours for your day off....and that might not be enough to take care of what you need to do and what you want to do.....just ask tons of questions and try to talk with workers who have experience at that spot....this forum is a great place to get in touch with those people.... happy trails/good luck Don

RE: Short term workamping

projects might be your main choice.......you likely can't ask about short term needs cause those would be like come today......if you have a vacation time you might call a few places looking for a project they might have that can happen when you are ready.....like the other poster mentioned painting tables or/and buildings, reworking a water system, etc. good luck/happy trails Don

RE: B2B sales on the road?

B2B..........is used to refer to people who sell things or provide services to people who sell/make things.... so you are a the first B your customer is the second B.....hence the clever handle B2B...... it had this retired Air Force guy going crazy for some time trying to figure what some un-aircrafty lookin' people were doing with the other B2B...........the bomber..... hope this helped... RE: way ahead of schedule

you will likely want to look further south, not neccessarily all the way south, but to where the weather is capable to allow camping year around..also very important is look for somewhere you want to be or go or visit.......there are even a few parks that are closed in the winter but have caretakers, security or minor maintenance (like things you do around the house) people in the winter... and single or couple doesn't matter as much as some might say....get that foot in the door and show them what you can do for them and their operation and you will have your choice of locations and jobs. After a bit you will be surprised at how really similar all those jobs are....also some volunteer positions have a stipend that cover some of your expences...so with many expences covered by your services, one mostly ends up paying for food and insurances and your entertainment costs go down due to the beautiful outdoors and goofy people......have fun. happy trails Don

RE: design your own workamping job?

park ranger might be a little hard/tricky to do, I've worked/managed a number of FS contracts and not even met the ranger........just stop into a visitors center or management office nearest the area you are looking at.....or you can stop any government vehicle in the area you are in and they can give you contact into....often at the fee stations there is contact information for the permit holder or forest/park manager. Good Luck Happy Trails Don

RE: B2B sales on the road?

yes, it is a verizon service and equipment....basically, it is cellular internet access.....you can add antenna's and boosters to bump up weak service......a USB720 is what we wanted to get the signal, but I'm sure they have several newer versions cause it was a couple years ago when we switched to this from a cell phone as the modem. It also has a adapter to plug the truckers antenna and booster into. But Wilson has wireless booster's now. It uses a system called VZAccess to control the calling and convert the cell signal to computer speak.... about 60 bucks a month for downloading 5 GB of data, was unlimited till last summer. But, if you stream movies and videos it will chew up your 5GB in 7 or 8 movies per billing cycle. But, normal e-mails, webpage maintenance and photo's you are safe. We also used it through the international plan and it didn't drain our bank account. hope that helps without being a commercial, but we have had excellent service to cost since signing up. Good Luck/Happy Trails Don

RE: Working in Alaska for 2010 Season

registration in AK...I'll tell you what, if they want me to get plates.....I want some of that money they give residents when they have a good income year.....I used to know military guys who went to AK on assignment and changed their residency.......enjoyed that check once a year....hahahaha most of the hosts and such we saw this year kept their residency state plates on for the summer.... RE: Amazon - Fernley, NV

You actually do work for the amazon staff, just like most temp. services, you get paid by the temp service, with money amazon pays them for your work. Will be anxious to hear how fernley works out, certianly as perfectly located as coffeyville for distribution of stuff out west

RE: Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center-Homer,AK

the visitors center is in Homer proper with a small refuge there and the larger refuges are dispersed around the islands and outer reaches of AK.

RE: Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center-Homer,AK

nowhere near homer?......thought this is the one right down by the safeway store isn't it?.....it is aways from the spit but in the newer end of the town.....we enjoyed our visit.....big long walkway down around a slough/bay/?????....that trail is mostly for birding... the alcan is being used allot that time of year but it too suffers damage during the winter so you need to keep your eye's open and watch for the orange flags or cones the canadians put out to mark what we lovingly called whoop dee doo's......don't be in a hurry. the cassiar is and will be messy and rough in spots, not a short cut as it might appear, sparse/expensive services....in a couple years it will be much better.... try to get something worked out for an RV spot....didn't talk to the volunteers about that.....they all enjoyed working there, had a nice little area away from guests to relax when on breaks and stuff. Plenty to do within a hour or so of Homer.....big fred meyer in soldatna and a new superwal mart opening 2010 in Kenia......those are about an hour and a half from homer....plenty of churches in homer.....kinda lacked resturant choices in homer...but again once you headed up to the kenia area you found plenty....lotsa local fishing there and north along the coast, make a friend of a local fisherman for great halibut and salmon fishing in cook inlet around there and the rivers have good fishing also.....anchorage is a good all day trip, everything there.........we actually probably spent most of our alaska time this last summer out on the kenia penninsula....deep creek has great razor claming on minus tides and catching ocean walleye (pollock), flounder out at the end of the spit never got old... we loved our summer up there this year. or can you tell by my rambling on and on......hahahaha please go to our blog we ran all summer as we traveled up there, and PM with more questions... Later Don www.pamperingcampers.blogspot.com

RE: Amazon - Fernley, NV

Well, amazon has proven to be appreciative of workampers...and if you look at the job discriptions for their permanent hires, they mention facilitating employees needs and supporting them. If they work the way the kansas guys do they even have info on rv parks.....it will be interesting to hear if that is a corporate approach to work camping. Hey there, Sgt. Joe!
