I just did a quick search and did not see anything thats related to a generator.
I now own a Yamaha EF2400IS generator. Its pretty new with maybe 10 hours on it. I just gave it its first oil change. I Used what the manual called for 10w-30. I used royal purple synthetic oil. I figured it can hurt to spend the 7.99$ for one quart. One quart will be good for 2 oil changes.
Has anyone else here used synthetic oil in there generators?

i use synthetic in my generac. it runs slightly cooler, and starts easier on really cold days. not once since changing to synthetic has it shut down for over temp. when using dyno oil it would shut down occasionally when outside temps went over 100 deg.

After stopping at Camping World twice to be told they were out of stock for the 10W-30 blended synthetic my genny takes I did some research. The consensus was that if you stayed with the same viscosity and API rating it would work just fine.
I decided to use Mobile 1 10W-30 in my Onan 4kw that has only 15 hours on it.
The only difference I could tell afterwards, was that the genny ran quieter.
The only problem I've seen was changing from dino to a synthetic in a 2 cycle engine; it busted all the carbon off the cylinder walls and deposited it in the spark plug gap!
(outboard motor)
Some will disagree as there has always been a debate on this subject, this is just my take.

I'd strongly recommend its use in an air cooled engine due to synthetics resistance to thermal break down. Them air cooled engines do run hot.

I've run Mobil 1 synthetic in my Yamaha EF2400 since the day I first fired it up.
It fires right up and runs great whether it is 95 dregrees or 5 degrees out.

I have synthetic in everything I own, from the mini bike, mower, genset, specialty syn in the big bike, Delvac 1 in the TV, the list goes on.
I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations.

Synthetic in an air cooled generator is a good idea-----if it's a good synthetic. I would, however, suggest Mobil 1, Shell Rotella, or the new Pennzoil Platinum synthetic instead. They all have good reputations. While Royal Purple has its supporters, there are also a lot of detractors (with very good creditionals). Spend a little time on Bob is the Oil Guy for more background.

I use Mobil 1 EP in my Onan 4KW and it runs quieter with it. A bit pricey, but the genny's crankcase quantity is so low that the $$ outlay is still small.
Next time I change oil in my Honda EX650 it'll get Mobil 1 EP too.

What weight Mobil One are you guys using? I use Mobile One 15-50 in my 1984 Ford 460 to reduce oil consumption. I would like to use it in my 25 year old 4.0 Onan genny as well just for the convenience of carrying only one type oil, but feel it may be a bit too heavy. Any thoughts or experience?? I have used only Onan 30 weight since I have owned it for the past six years.
