Can't wait til June, heading Southwest in January(maybe Mexico), Barrett-Jackson, Quartzsite, etc. then to Montana to head North to Alaska after last Snowstorm.

I second the use of a coastline cover or similar tow car shield. We had one shipped to Fairbanks after spending a couple of hours trying to get all the gravel out of the vent area of the Toad. THe shield was about $300 well spent.

one other thing to bring along (or buy once you are up here) is dryer sheets...we have some serious bug issues up here! LOL!

Two things we did that worked well: added the 1/4" hardware cloth to the front of the radiator - and it saved our engine. Not from rocks, but from butterflies!!!! For whatever reason, there were millions of white and yellow butterflies along the road in Montana/Alberta, and they actually clogged up the radiators and overheated cars! Every time we stopped for a break or to fuel up, I took my little toothbrush (sacrificed for butterfly elimination) and brushed off the screen.

The other thing we did was buy "Transit Shield" - the saran-wrap-like stuff they put on new cars to protect them on car haulers. We put Transit shield on the chassis front, overhang, and "shoulders" of our Class C. It doesn't go on smoothly, so our MH looked kind of wrinkled and disheveled....but at the end of a 9,000+ mile drive, it pulled off and about 200 lbs of bug guts and road grime came with it!

Our only "casualty" was the windshield - which got stone chips from our stupidity - drove into a construction zone too fast and met an oncoming gravel truck.....

We didn't bring our toad.

Am I the only one that thinks bug guts smell like rotting fish? Eyuk! I've seen birds sitting on our bumper having a feast. I catch my dog cleaning the fog lights too!

3M makes this great armor coating. I'm going to put it on the leading edge of my hood. Hood protectors are a pain and don't look so great.

Hey, aktraveler. how do those dryer sheets work? Do you eat 'em or somethin'?

Lose the rock shield on the back of your MH---they'll kick up more rocks than stop. We didn't add any dings to our Explorer with nothing but the mud flaps behind the MH duals and a grass skirt under its bumper.

Spare fuel filter and fan belt is a good idea (or replace them before you go).

We did Alaska this year. Fully service & check everything before you go. Carry the basic spares, fuel filter, oil filter & such. Alaska is not the end of the world but if you have something a little unusual having the spare may save some time if it is needed. Slow down. Slow down. Slow down. So what if you have to drive some stretches at 25 or 30mph. You are on vacation. Don't be trying to do 2 months worth of sightseeing in 1. Roads are no better or worse than those found in the lower 48. Drive at a speed appropriate for the road.

I made a homemade bug screen for the radiator out of window screening & zip ties courtesy of LOWES. No flats, 1 little ding on the front cap of the trailer, 1 itty bitty chip on the windshield & 1 tiny chip on the hood. That was it! We did do the TOW & Cassiar.

Be prepared to get muddy. Oh well. Wash up when you can. Otherwise, don't worry about it. This is not a pretty RV parade. Have fun.

If you plan on fishing, take your "seal-a-meal" or other vaccuum sealer system. Shipping the fish is expensive.
