The 'Hill' as it is known into or out of Bella Coola is a wild ride, make no mistake. One lane, dirt/ravel, with switch backs. The tractor trailer guys will stop, get out and walk ahead to see what's coming on some of the corners. And sue.t there is another way out or in...ferry. Some people come in from Vancouver Island on the ferry and then Bob's yer uncle...drive out.
As for the road between Pt Alberny and the wet side..there is likely to be a few steep pitches but they aren't forever..tho they might feel like it! One things for sure...when they say SLOW, STEEP GRADE?..they really do mean it. It's tough tho when you have a rig on your rear bumper and no where to pull off.

Grades on the ALCAN and other major routes in Alaska are no steeper than in the rest of the US. I fail to understand why some people try to make travel in Alaska seem like a third-world nightmare.

JackD,
I would like to see a picture of that road behind that sign. It must look like an elevator shaft. Something like the streets of San Francisco.

Yeah, but 18% Canadian is only something like 10% American.

For those interested in STEEP grades in Canada see this post "Stewart-Cassiar and the Telegraph Creek Road" by explorenorth on Oct. 21 in Canada-Alaska forum, and clip on his clicky. But the pictures hardly do justice to the road. Been there - done that (1995)
