Hubby and I are celebrating are 25th anniversary next year and after recently visiting the area on business, he is fascinated with coastal Washington. From what I can tell from the pics, it's a stunning area. We will be flying and taking our son, who will be 17 when we go sometime next summer. I am limited to traveling at less than 7,000 feet which is fine on the immediate coast, but there's also the national parks to consider. We like hiking, kayaking, biking, walking, nature/wildlife, fairs, zoos, some tourist traps, outdoors in general and sometimes just puttering around. Looking for suggestions on things to do, places to go and where to stay. Thanks.

Plan on Ocean Shores. Elevation 0 - fantastic walk for miles and miles. Too bad about the 7000 feet, 'cause Mt St Helen was one of the top 3 sights on our recent 9000 mile jaunt.

Go see the pics on the blog.

Go to Seattle and tour from there. We have been three times and would go back in a heartbeat. For a special dinner, try Canli's. You won't be disappointed.
Don't climb Mt. Rainier - you will be over your altitude limit

Tour the Olympic Peninsula/Olympic National Park, from east to west! Fantastic geography. And do not miss the side trip into the Hoh rain forest!

I've lived in WA all my life--including Seattle--and I would stay as far away from the Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia area as possible unless you love heavy traffic.
The Olympic Peninsula, including a hike in the Olympic Mountains, and the San Juan Islands (you'll have to take the ferry but that's cool, too). Plenty of kayaking opportunities there.

We spent a month there in June and July of 2007 -- can't wait to go back. You are in luck -- there are wonderful mountains that are not over 5000 feet high. These are the Olympics:

Be sure to see the North Cascades, on the mainland north of Seattle. This is Mt. Baker -- this shot is taken from the 4000 foot level:

We found that the campgrounds in the national forests in Washington were very well managed -- try to stay in some of the remote areas, as well as in the RV parks, if possible.

While you are out here from Massachusetts, don't miss seeing the Oregon coast, too. All of Oregon's beaches are open to the public, which is not true in Washington. Among the attractions are Cannon Beach, the Tillamook Cheese Factory, the Tillamook Air Museum, several lighthouses, several first class golf courses on the dunes of the southern coast, Sea Lion caves, and the breathtaking scenery along the entire length of the coast.

On the Washington coast there are Longbeach/Willapa Bay; Gray's Harbor; Neah Bay; Port Angeles and Hurricane ridge (elevation 5,240 ft.), which offers spectacular views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca; Sequim, a lovely town on Dungeness Bay; Port Townsend, a historic town full of Victorian homes and wonderful restaurants and museums; the Olympic rain forest; Hood Canal, the longest fjord in America; and all the other places that have already been mentioned.

I hope you can stay a long time. There is so much to sea on the coast in the Pacific Northwest.

Enjoy, Tom

The blogs and pics are GREAT! Thank you sooooo much. Not sure if we'll have one week or two-it all depends on finances and whether or not we're willing to let the Endura sit for that long. My wish would be to spend a month out there but that's not likely to happen any time soon.

When on the Olympic Pennisula, go to Lake Ozette and hike the board walk to Cape Alava. Also visit Deception Pass on the north end of Whidbey Island. Well worth the time and all near sea level.
