We are heading west on I20 from Dallas and we're going to head north to 180 or 380 to check out this area. Any tips on hills (hard pulls) or neat stuff to see would be appreciated. We have a 39' fiver and 1ton diesel Ford and are not into expensive touristy stuff.

North of Carlsbad is Lake Brantly State Park which is a nice overnight stay and about 25 miles northwest of the park is Sitting Bull Falls, a really nice area to explore for a day...then of course north is Roswell and the White Sands area and El Paso to the west. Along the way in Texas, north of your route is Caprock Canyon State Park which is really worth the visit, and if you hike or bike, be sure to take the tunnel route for the bats and the owls feeding on the bats...amazing scenery and wildlife. And by the way as you pass through Lubbock, check out the Silent Wings Museum at the airport, a truly unique place if you have any aeronautical or WWII interest.

It's not quite Southeast NM, but we really enjoyed touring the Very Large Array which is located 50 West of Socorro on US 60.
Here's a link with information, in case you're interested.

Drove through a bunch of interesting little towns along the way. Seems US 60 is popular for RV'ers down there. You see the real New Mexico.

If you are coming across NM into AZ be sure to stop at the Willcox Visitor Center/ Stout's Cider Mill (same parking lot) and sample their apple pie!! I kid you not - they put 8 pounds of sliced apples in every full sized pie!! Delicious!
