Hi all, anybody have any thoughts been there done that of Nova Scotia.
We are planning to go next year for 5 weeks from the mid west. Been told mid Sept to mid Oct best time to go, We will be camping on the north east side of the island about 10 minutes from the Cabot trail. Then taking our motorbikes around the area. I will be taking my dogs so if we stay overnight somewhere in a motel are pets generally allowed. Camper will stay at the campground while we travel on overniters.
Thanks Slink

While fall weather in Nova Scotia is usually very very nice, there will be places you might want to visit that will be closed.

Quite a few of these very worth while places are staffed by university students. These will usually have left said jobs by the middle of the last week of August.

That said, places like the Fortress at Louisbourg, a must, must, must visit, will be open, but may have reduced hours after Sept 1.

You will find campgrounds closed in most places after Canadian Thanksgiving. Or, the cgs will be open the Sunday night, October 11, but closed the Monday Thanksgiving night, October 12, 2009.

To be sure all of the hiking options and the Tidal Bore type items will be less crowded.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

We spent 3 weeks at the Baddeck Campground this summer. Nice Campground. Rode the Cabot Trail both ways on our Road King. Watch out for the moose. There are lots of them and they seem to think they have the right of way.

I recommend Hall's Harbour. It's a beautiful fishing wharf and it's where I had the best lobster I ever had (and I used to live in lobster country). We had our meal right on the wharf as the tide changed. It changes about twenty-five feet at that spot.

You will find the tempratures a little cold on your motorbikes by mid-October. Daytime temps are only in the 40`s (F) and after dark mid 30`s. The reason nearly all campgrounds close around the first or second weekend of October is that they have to winterize the water system as nights below 32 are expected.
We camp in the fall in Nova Scotia and after labour day many provincial parks are closed. On the upside, no crowds, you pretty much have the place to yourself. If you can manage mid-August to mid-September it is much warmer. If you are interested in fall colours you will see them by mid-September. I believe the Atlantic Lobster season closes around October 1st as well.

On October the 8th of this year we had freezing rain on a section of the Cabot Trail.

The Fall Leaves are spectacular in mid October but the temperatures will be cool to cold. Early September the temperatures will be more moderate but you will miss the color of the fall leaves.

As stated before the Fortress Louisbourg is a must see.

A visit to Meat Cove could to be interesting. A couple of years ago, it was rated as one of the top ten places for away-from-it-all camping in an American outdoors magazine. Also noted in another American magazine is the only Canadian single malt scotch distillery (but I don't think they're allowed to call it scotch). I think it's at Glenora. Morrison's Restaurant has been highly rated in Canadian travel magazines.

We went for the first three weeks of September and we found that after Labour Day, may things were either closed, ended (like céilidhs, and other musical entertainment) or had shorter operating hours. Also, most of this was not announced in CAA/AAA books, so that was a bit of a problem.

August would be better, IMHO!
