Let me see if I am understanding all this right...
If my trailer.... trailer alone... has an axle weight of more than 10,141 lbs or 4600kg, then I must have a drivers license that is A...
Or is it AR?
I read through the posts... and I'm a bit confused with it all.
Also, I just found out, that in the state of WI, the trailer tag is for the trailer and the truck tag is for the truck. For example, if my truck and trailer weighs 16,680 lbs, then all is ok because my trailer tag would take care of the weight of the trailer. But... the truck would be overweight when I hook up my 5ver as it will drop 1,420 lbs in the back of the truck. Therefore to be legal, I should have a class "D" tag on my truck. Which, since I have a class "C" now, it will be allowed until the next time I register the truck.
But... I do not have to change my drivers license in WI. I can drive on my "regular" drivers license.
What you guys are saying though, that if I do go into Canada, which I plan on doing, I must get an "A" license? right?

The laws that govern drivers licenses in your home state or province apply to any province or state that you are travelling in so drivers outside of Ontario don't have to worry if they are legally licensed where they live.
I posed the question to my insurance company this morning and this is their response:
"Yes, your insurance could be invalid if you are in an accident and are not properly licensed. The Statutory Conditions of your policy, under Authority to Drive state “the insured shall not drive or operate or permit any other person to drive or operate the automobile unless the insured or other person is authorized by law to drive or operate it.” So if the vehicle, trailer, etc requires an A license, and you are driving with only a G license, a claim could be denied. The renewal we send every year doesn’t include the full policy wording, please let me know if you would like me to send you a complete wording. Hope this answers your question."
Any fiver with 12,000 pounds or higher GVWR has the strong potential to exceed the trigger weight on the axles. My recommendation is to weigh the rig to be sure of the class of license you need and take the appropriate action to be sure you are covered. Failure to do so could be the most expensive mistake of your life.

Those running into issues with licence class requirements in Ontario are quite likely going to find that they are going to be off-base with registered weights and such.
I made a very detailed post on tow vehicle licensing requirements in Ontario some time back in this thread. Beware there is a LOT of misinformation in the beginning of that thread, so read through it for the facts.

Trailer Trash 2 you can call it a class A or a class C endorsment, the only difference is when you take the test you don't have to deal with air brakes, you still have to take the written test - air brakes need a physical every 2, must tow a trailer during the test capable of towing 10,000 lbs (even if it dose'nt) and the ussual backing up and road drive and the walk around , i verifed this by walking in the other room and asking my wife who works for DMV in Ca. who intern called her aunt who is a DMV manager, some people say class A some say class C upgrade you make the call
