Cookie, our 4 month old Shihtzu mix has been throwing up today for some reason that we cannot figure out. She is still playing, walking and passing urine, having bowl movements, she drinks and eats but then throws it up. She does not have a fever and is acting normal other that this throwing up. We have not changed her food, so are puzzled. We walk her on leash, but wondereing if she could have picked up something while walking, she loves sniffing and licking everything she come across but we do try and not let her do it, it is still possible. Any ideas? Thanks

Hmmmmmm.... its a mystery. I'd get her to the vet sooner than later, that's my only idea. Might be something minor but with a pup and a small breed at that, there's not so much margin for error or delay.
If she's got some non-pigmented skin you can see, I'd check that and the whites of her eyes for any signs of jaundice. That would be the extreme end of things, but having lost a cat to liver failure, it's what I always think of with vomiting.

When our dogs are sick and throwing up, we feed cooked white rice instead of dog food. They eat early morning and then in the evening, missing at least one dog food meal. This normally helps.
Much like with a child, when our pets don't feel good we worry.
Good luck.

Thanks for the quick replies. Cookies eyes are clear, no problem there. We will call the vet today if she doesn't keep her breakfast down, so far so good.
Thank you for the white rice idea, will keep that in mind.

We have two shihtzu's,brother & sister and seems like one is allways throwing up from time to time. Our male when a puppy would on any car ride but now that he is 2 years old seldom does. The female eats to fast and to much at once and will throw up everytime. Plus watch the human food as somethings just upset thier stomach very easy.

If it continues/persists, I would say, a visit to the Vet. IMO that it is always best to be safe, if for anything but for your peace of mind!
On the other hand, Baby use to eat grass then throw it up later during the next day or so. What came up was always the grass so I never worried when she did that.

We took Cookie to the vet they took an Xray after checking her. The vet did see a couple of small items in the bowl tract and said Cookie probably ate something that irritated her stomach which os on the way out that has created some gastritis (spelling), we bought some Mylenta and special food, will follow instructions of vet for giving Mylenta and food for tonight and see how it goes. If she is still having issues will take her back in the morning and go from there. If she does not improve overnight, they will keep her overnight as surgery to remove items will have to take place.
She is still a happy little girl, no fever, so praying all will be good come morning.
Thanks for all your replies.

I am glad you took COokie to the vet, at least you can rule out Parvo
I work in a campground and am always concerned about the Parvo Virus lurking in the ground as it is so contageous and deadly

I wish you and Cookie the very best. I know how difficult it is when our little ones are not doing very well. Our previous Bichon had a similar problem where she ate something (my husbands ear plugs) and got sick, our vet suggested the Rice diet and finally she passed it (Thank God); otherwise she would have needed surgery.
Hoping and praying for all of you - Sandy
