My mom's beagle had a similar incident a couple of months ago--"suddenly" started showing signs of some pretty intense pain. We took her to the vet and she was eventually diagnosed with a disc problem in her neck. It was touch and go for awhile, we were really worried about losing her (for whatever reasons, the vet didn't think she was a candidate for surgery). After a few days in hospital and then a couple more weeks of prednisone at home, she seems to have completely recovered. I sure hope your dog does as well! I said "suddenly" because in hindsight I'm pretty sure she was showing subtle signs of pain for awhile before the crisis. My mom just isn't dog-savvy enough to have noticed and I wasn't around enough to notice. From what I understand, disc/back problems can come on very suddenly or slowly over time.
Vibes for a complete recovery!

Yes, Dee... as you can imagine I was a bit stressed this morning when Tootsie started crying like she did. It was an awful, heartbreaking sound and to see her all hunched up like that well, it was horrible.
This particular injury hinted at it's existence last night, but nothing like this morning. She let us know she was in pain, loud and clear! Upon our careful reflection of last night, we recalled how she wouldn't get up in the chair with me while I was reading and my DH was watching college football. Sometimes she acts goofy for a few minutes like she can't jump and needs help but will go ahead and jump. Last night, she never did get on the chair until I picked her up. Everything else seemed fine last night, she played with her toys and was her usual mischevious self. Curious as that seems now...
I am so relieved there was just some swelling and nothing alarming like disc damage or spinal cord injury on the x-rays.

Hope Tootsie is doing better. Boy does that vet bill look familiar.
A few years back we felt like we were running a geriatric ward for kitties. We had 7 cats over the age of 16.. One had thyroid problems and another was diagnosed with diabetes. We said at the time that one of our credit cards belonged to our cats. Between dental care, blood tests and insulin, we always had vet bills.
I do believe we put our vets kid through college.
One morning we woke up to find one of our kitties walking around in pain with a hunched back like you described. We felt she must have fallen off something or jumped and landed wrong.. After all she was getting old...The vet took ex-rays and could find nothing wrong. We gave her meds and in time she was fine.
Sounds like Tootsie is going to be fine too. What we go through for our furry babies.

Cat...so sorry about Tootsie. Here's hoping everything heals the way it is supposed to. We have doxies. Our 12 y/o, Molly...2 years ago right about now, we were in Branson and DH took her outside potty and when she came in the RV, she was dragging her hind legs. Well...the next morning (sat)she ended up in the Animal ER in Springfield, where they gave her prednisone, a muscle relaxer and kept her over-nite for observation. My DH went and picked her up on Sun and we were faced with the choice of surgery (80 chance of recovery) or kenneling for a month with more of the same meds (70% chance of recovery). We opted to take her back to the RV and keep her quiet. Long story short...2 years later and I would say she has recovered. We went to Lowes and got that clear carpet protector with the stickery nubs on one side and we put that on the couches and chairs with the sharp stickery things face up. Neither of our dogs will jump onto the furniture now. We have a roll that we take with us when we go to motels to keep them from jumping onto the beds. It is a bit of an inconvenience to have to move it when we want to sit on the furniture, but, whatever works. We still allow our dogs onto the couch, etc. but we lift them up there. Good luck to you with Tootsie.

Glad Tootsie does not have anything more serious. We have a Maltese that was showing these signs, hunched back and neck, not wanting to even go down a 2 inch step, but thought she was in mourning since we had just put another of our Maltese down. After many vet visits with xrays and nothing serious turning up but she was not getting any better, we took her to a neurologist to find out it was a very rare disease called GME. BTW, to keep Kissie calm and quiet we took the cage of the pet stroller we have and put her in it with her favorite blanket. Since she was in the den with us, she was content. Hopefully Tootsie will be back to normal in no time!

Thanks Barb and Leatha & Jim. Interesting way to cure your doxies from jumping on the furniture. Tootsie is doing pretty well with the new rules and waits for us to pick her up if she wants to sit beside us now.
Jan I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's disease. Is there medication to help her? How is Kissie doing these days? Would you mind telling me what GME stands for?

Cat and Jim, thanks for asking about Kissie especially with all you have gone through with your beloved pets. GME stands for a very long name - Granulomatous Meningoencephalomyelitis and is an auto-immune disorder. There are different kinds and hers is multifocal. Kissie was diagnosed with this in 10/07 and is in remission. She is on chemo shots each month, twice daily for 2 consecutive days and takes 2.5mg of prednisone every other day. Most vets have never heard of GME and aren't familiar with the symtoms. If we had not taken her to a neurologist, she would not be with us today. There is no cure for GME and the big problem is the prednisone, which must be taken, can and probably will cause other problems down the road. But we have our Kissie and at this time she is doing great!!! Again, thanks for asking and still sending Tootsie hugs! Jan
