cruiserjs wrote: Benson is a pretty central location for southern AZ. Plenty of great exploration; Chiricahua Nat. Monument, Coronado Mtns., Tombstone/Bisbee/Douglas areas, Sierra Vista, Huachuca Mtns. and our favorite birding spot - Ramsey Canyon. All these, and much more, an easy day trip from Benson!
We are in Tombstone Territories RV Park about 30 miles from Benson, 10 miles from Tombstone, 20 miles from Sierra Vista, we love the whole area, there is so much to see and enjoy withn a short distance, we are hopeful that we can return next winter. As you said it might cool off at night but sure warms up during the day. The last 2 days the temps have been in the high 70's.
Do enjoy and maybe we can get together while your in Benson!

That would be 2 of us here at Tombstone Territories. I'm waving at you, Woody. The wife & I go to Benson at least once a week for groceries. Less of a crowd then at Sierra Vista!

We're gonna head out right after Christmas from Illinois to Arizona again this year. I hope the weather clears up a bit so it won't be such a nasty drive to get to warmer climes along the way.
We plan to stop overnight in Marshfield, MO... then a couple days just west of Ft.Worth around newyears... then an overnight just south of Elpaso... and a couple weeks just west of Tucson. We like to walk the trails of the Saguaro Natl Park and MUST visit a few of our favorite restaurants. Then it's on to Apache Junction until April. We are SO ready to get out of this snow and on the road southwest!
Since we'll be stayin a while in Tucson and will carry the Smart car with us in the coach this time instead of our trusty old sidecar rig, we are thinkin of visiting the border town at Nogales this trip. Anybody got any suggestions as to the crossing or parking areas... shopping spots for maybe vanilla and such?... and of course which are the real good restaurants and where do they mix the very best margarhita? These are important items for any day trip!
We enjoyed a trip to Ciudad Acuna last year whilst stopping for a while in Del Rio. We enjoyed Ma Crosby's restaurant so much that I moved it to the very top of my list of GREAT mexican eateries. The local constabulary got a kick out of my old military sidecar rig which we rode across the border. Immediately had about twenty gun-toting doods checkin us out. They were very friendly and just wanted to know about the rig. Parking was excellent at Ma Crosby's and inside a high wall with security. No problemo.
I hope to have a similar good experience in Nogales. Any tips?
Thanks

Nogales might not be the safest place to go! Fighting between drug dealers has killed a lot of people! I guess getting caught in the crossfire would be the biggest danger. How lucky do you feel?

hobo wrote: Why would you want to spend the winter in Benson,AZ?
I have been there 3 times for a week at a time, and can't see any reason to stay any longer. Hobo
THIS HOBO & Betty love the BENSON, AZ area.
Why? Fits our lifestyle. Uncrowded & wide open spaces. Can get cool @ night, but usually warms up nicely in the daytime.
We've stayed @ the BUTTERFIELD RESORT & used that as a base camp for touring & tent camping on BLM lands on our motorcycle.
My family & me moved to Az. in 1948,& over the yrs. lived in Phoenix, Tucson & Yuma.
We now live in Virginia & have for the last 45 yrs., but i have to get back to Az. @ least every 3-4 yrs..
we like Southern Az,Tucson/Benson area in the Winter & Northern Az, Showlow, Payson, Hannigans Meadow in the Summer.
It may not be for everybody, but it suits us just fine..........
I'm Dave,the hobo,Cassidy & I approve this msg

The Karchner Caverns are nearby , it's not far to Bisbee , Tombstone and several Other Ghost Towns. The Local Shopping is a bit on the Sparse side but it isn't far over to Tucson. There is an Air Museum and a ICBM Site/Museum not far away also!
Also If it is too Cold ,Nogales and Mexico are just South of there!

We spend our winters here in Benson. We liked it so much we purchased a mobile in San Pedro Rv Resort about a mile or so south on hwy 80. It's far enough away from the railroad so we don't get any noise to speak of. Beautiful view of the mountains. Nice friendly park. Sure beats montana in the winter.

Shootings in Nogales??
I'm thinkin there are a LOT more drug dealers shootin each other and the locals in Chicago than in Nogales and Juarez combined... and they probably are armed with MUCH better hardware.... :-))
I think we're gonna head down to Nogales for a day and check it out. Probably park on the US side and walk over to maybe La Roca or another eatery from what I've read on the net anyway. We need to pick up some of that fresh and pure vanilla from Mexico too, and I'm always searching for that perfectly crafted margarhita. I have sampled more than one... but still search for perfection...
Somebody has to do it or it won't get done...

You are going to put a smart car in your rig.... that sounds great what arte you driving?
We are heading for Q Arizona for Jan/Feb and am bringing our 2 seater bicycle on the front of the TC.... if we like it next year we would get an enclosed trailer and load it with the Harley.
I saw that campground with the observatory in the directory and will make an effort to stay a few Clear day and nights.

We have the WH version of the Damon garage coach. The Smart car rides in back just peachy. We mostly carry a sidecar motorcycle rig, but on long trips where we want some greater radius of travel and a bit better all-weather comfort then we take the Smart. We can use the garage as a "game room" and computer room when parked for a long period. I usually put the sidecar rig in the garage each night cuz it's a bit goofy and draws gawkers constantly. The Smart stays outside like a big boy and ain't askeert of the dark...
