Well, I think you far more experienced travelers have convinced us 3 women to make our 2-week+ trip to Glacier National Park a little later than mid-May...(from an earlier thread titled Boondocking - Yellowstone or Glacier, and other threads...).
As a reminder, our main objectives are 1) wildlife viewing (read "bears"), and 2) as few crowds as possible...(I'm actually not sure which is top of the list.)
That being said, because of the strong possibility of bad weather and closed roads, we're now thinking of starting out the weekend AFTER Labor Day (9/7) - Friday, September 11 through Saturday, September 26. What do you guys think would be our best best to achieve our main objectives - mid-through-end September, or first two weeks in June?
Sorry to be such a pest, but I'd like to have the best chance of a GREAT trip, unlike last year's weather fiasco...(horrible, horrible weather mid-May-to-end June). Maybe I should finish off this lovely bottle of wine and throw a dart at a calendar????
Thanks!
Regards,
Michelle
PS: We reached 66 today! Spring is starting to creep its way into NW Tennessee...wanna take bets on whether or not I have winter damage from the first time I winterized my little trailer?

After school starts in Sept as soon as you can leave. To me the Sept 11th date sounds best. June will still have snow on the mountains but Sept. will have the trees changing and be warmer. We were there last Aug., wind rain and clouds but it was beautiful, take warm coats and shorts, sandals and boots. Just my opinion but Sept. is the best time of the year to be in the Rocky Mountains.

If you want to go up to Logan pass, I'd hold out going until mid to late June. I would head out the just before Labor Day. Most schools have just started and crowds will be down. Also, the free shuttles only run during peak season and end operations shortly before Labor Day. Much of the snow will be gone around Logan Pass making hiking in the area much easier. The Hike to the Hidden Lake overlook is well worth it.
We were there this past August and got hit with cold and rain

We spend our summers at East Glacier Park. The park starts reducing services about the middle of Sept. The crowds very. The berrys are ripping and animals are more active getting ready for winter. I don't know what the schedule for Going to the Sun Road is for this year. But last year there were major closing in Sept. for surfacing work. The road is in the middle of a 6 year reconstruction program. Bring hiking stuff and you should be OK.

We, also, have been going in the spring, but this year we are leaving Ca. on the Friday before Labor Day and and hoping to see lots of animals in Yellowstone before the winter arrives.

Having visited all of your "target parks" during May, June, July, August, September, and October, my preference for any/all of the Rocky Mountain parks is "fall".
Depending on your first destination, how fast you want to travel, and what you want to see/do along the way, my suggestion is that you leave TN around the last week or so of August, plan to spend Labor Day weekend somewhere you can make reservations, and visit Glacier and whatever else during the first couple weeks of September. Crowds are still there, but since kids in many areas of the country return to school the last part of August, there are fewer tourists in September. Check the park's website (www.nps.gov/glac) for campground and other services closing dates, lok at private campgrounds on both sides of the park for additional "staying" options, go prepared for all kinds of weather, and have fun!

June is always a******shoot for Logan Pass at Glacier. It would be a shame to not be able to enjoy the entire Sun road experience. Go later.
