There are many ads in area newspapers looking for census workers. Are any workkampers signing up, or have any of you experience with this type of work? I'm reading 20-40 hours/week. Naturally it is temporary work..

Most of the census is done by mail. Only areas where the response is poor do the census takers actually go out in the field. If you enjoy walking alone in dangerous neighborhoods, areas where homeless people live, and housing projects, then this is a great job!

Thanks for the heads up info. Might be a lot of people after these jobs with all the high unemployment.

I called the Census, signed up and took the test at the end of January. There are 28 questions, all multiple choice answers, with some being math, reading ability, etc. They give 30 minutes to take the test and give you the option of waiting until the papers are graded, so you can get you score. The first round of people hired will be going out to designated areas with a GPS and checking the address of the census with the actual address. For example, if the GPS indicates the address is a vacant lot, but now there is a house on the lot, you would change the GPS system to reflect the house. This is in preparation of the 2010 census and I think the jobs go from Feb-April 2009 paying from $9.99-$19.99.

I just contacted the Arkansas Census office. They need people now for parts of Arkansas. I'll bet there are plenty of jobs available if you want them.

The number I called was 1-866-861-2010 and you can go to the website at www.census.gov, they also have a practice test that you can take. Hope this helps.

wayne_tw,
I've looked into the job, and you are mistaken. The '09 work is strictly mapping as USA Traveler described. I was told that this year's work will last 5-10 weeks, and range from 20-40 hours/week.
The pay range I was quoted is ten-fourteen dollars/hour.
The door to door canvasing work takes place in May-June of 2010, and
involves only those not responding to the census mailing.
Interestingly, I/we never received the 2000 census. We have used a PMB at a mailing center for 8 years, along with the mailbox on the street that receives only 'occupant' mail.

I worked the 2000 census and it was hard work, must pay attention to detail. I enjoyed it. I was a regular worker. Back roads in rural Vermont, I went into houses and truly learned how my neighbors lived, some were very poor. Many questions you have to ask are very personal, like how much money they make, etc. Enlightening. I think I made around $10/hr. The trainers made twice that. I expect there will be many applicants.
