Based on the info in this thread, I contacted the Utah state office yesterday and took the test today. Am told it will be a week or so before they sift through the apps and make contact. Be interesting to see what develops. There were two testing sessions at the local test location today.....8 people only at the session I attended.

Just an update. I have been hired by the census folks and begin my four days of training next Monday. Training site is two hours away...they will pay board and room for this plus $.55/mile for travel. They tell me I will be getting 11 weeks of work, 40 hours per week, up to $13.50/hour.Don't know anymore than that at the moment. Will keep you posted.

I to have been accepted. Pay will be $11.25 hr. mileage $.55 per mile. Training starts Mar 30 for 5 days. Its about 20 miles to training site and they will pay mileage. They say it will be a minimum of 20 but not over 40 hours a week. I think they are still looking for people in my area. I have a summer commitment. They said go ahead and train then work till I have to leave, there will be more to do when I get back in late Oct. Hours will be very flexible. Some weekend and evening will be required.

So far, so good. Attended 1st day of indoctrination/training yesterday....site was over 200 miles round trip. Including expenses, I made over $250 for an 11 hour day ($0.55/mile, 8 hours reg pay, 3 hours overtime..hours include travel time). My cost about $14.00 in gas and a bite @ Taco Bell. I will be a trainer in a couple of weeks, not sure what level. They seem to be very liberal with expenses and overtime. Heck, I may have to delay my early summer trip, but when I do go, it'll get paid for.
As I understand it, overtime pay is automatic for the training period, but once training over, hours must be kept to 40/week, though not 8/day, and overtime must be preauthorized. Trainer/Crew Leaders get an automatic authorization for 5 hours of overtime per week, so should plan on 45 hours a week.....we'll see.
Train all next week, but won't make the 200 mile RT. They will put me up in a hotel and provide a generous per diem. Pretty interesting so far with definite bureaucratic overtones.

Quick update. I'm deeply into the program now. Yes, very intense and detailed 40 hour weeks for about 12 weeks. My territory is VERY large...roughly 3000 square miles, rural and small towns. At 55 cents a mile I should be able to finance a nice RV trip when this is over. As a supervisor, much of my job will be to travel this area daily and put out the inevitable fires. A lot of miles for my little rice burner. Note that this phase (a year before the actual census) is strictly "mapping", so contact with public is minimal, so we don't get personal with anyone. It's interesting. There are very probably still jobs available.

Happy to hear about your experience and hope it works well for you.
I was hired for quality control (review three percent) and start training on April 13th.
It sounds as though you will have considerable wheel time in a remote area. Good Luck !!

summutt, Have you finished up in your area? We should finish up QC in our area within the next 2-3 weeks. I've enjoyed working as a CLA, but am now spending more time doing AA's. After a few weeks, I found the listers I worked with to be doing fine, so I don't physically visit with them as much. 700 miles and 35-40 hours/week. I'm considering doing OLQ canvassing when that starts up, supposedly this summer. In order to enjoy the limited good summer weather here in Maine, I'll probably limit myself to 20-25 hrs on that project. I hope all went well for you..
