Well....I found a deal on a 2008 ef2400is Yamaha genny.

So I decide to go and check it out, and see just how quiet this genny
is, compared to my Powermate.

Well I posted two videos, one of the powermate and the Yamaha.

Powermate

Yamaha

All I can say is wow.

Anybody wanna buy a powermate?

Good choice, you are now a member of the people who get berated by the owners of loud generators trying to justify their purchases.

Welcome to the quiet side.

I have the same model generator and I've been very happy with it.

Hey Paul the main Mouseman,

Those of us with Champions like quiet toooo. Just look at those folks who are busy trying to quiet them so we can be happy camper neighbors with the Red and Blue lucky folks. Many other threads are offering ideas that might help lower the noise just a little. Be patient with us, we want to camp along side you blue and red foxes. Maybe we can build a 'Pyramid' and go down in history.

Edit:

Diabs,

I forgot to say, great choice

I can sell all of you a "quiet kit" for your loud gennys. The original kit came with 1/2 mile extension cord, chain and lock for your genset. Due to customer feedback I now only offer the 1/2 mile extension cord and hope someone steals it!!

The Yamaha kicked up...probably about the same throttle, but the sound was still less than the powermate at idle. Along with a lower exhaust note.

That's been my observation. At any comparable load, a generator designed with noise abatement in mind, is quieter than an open frame generator.

Now load both of them with a 1500 watt heater and the difference won't be near as much. Inverter gens have a great advantage when they are minimally loaded, not so much when you max them out and they have to run at max speed.

While not really on topic I'll say that we have a constant speed 8Kw liquid cooled Power Tech diesel gen, runs a 1800 rpm at idle or full load. I've compared the sound level to a 7.5Kw Onan which is variable speed (up to 3600 rpm). At idle the Onan is slightly quieter, at full load our PT is slightly quieter. Enough to make much difference? Not really

Zing!!! Good one!

Old & Slow, yes, compared to a Coleman Powermate, even a Champion seems quiet, but it still isn't a quiet generator. I've heard them at the campground and they are no where near as quiet as my Yamaha (which I wish was as quiet as a Honda 3000, the ultimate in quiet).

And whomever stated that at full throttle they are all the same, also not true. The Yamaha at full throttle is still much quieter than any non-inverter generator with no load on it. No matter whan the "numbers" say, you can readily hear the difference in the campground.

Absolutely true but the inverter gens are much quieter when running at low loads. I think it is worth noting that the inverter gens are very impressive when lightly loaded but are closer to a gas Onan when they are under a heavy load. Same is true with the Onan diesel inverter gens...they are very quite at low loads but are closer to the gas units when they are loaded.

Thanks to all for the comp's. I really wish I could tackle the sound quailty on the powermate. The DW thinks I'm bit crazy, as long as she dosen't see the visa bill, I may live alittle longer and not get that label!

But I know she'll have a change of thought when the time arises for a/c while boondocking either at a campground or in the middle of nowhere.

At least ther's some video for others who may want a idea on sound for either of these models.

Hope to see ya'all down the road!

As the owner of both I strongly disagree with this (Mincing words, you said 'closer', so ok, it is 'closer', but it's not 'close'). I realize the installation of the Onan has a lot to do with this, so speaking only for my own equipment, the fully-loaded eu2000i is way quieter than the Onan at any load level. In my rig, the Onan is on one side and the exhaust is on the other. This makes it possible for me to tell that the mechanical noise is a bit louder than the exhaust. With the eu2000i, the exhaust noise IMO totally overwhelms the mechanical noise. Inside the rig, it's no contest: A slight hum when the Honda is running, while the Onan noise starts to become painful after a few minutes.
