If this issue gets significant news coverage outside of WA, watch who they blame in Olympia. The more people who are turned away from those more desirable parks, the better this plays. Watch them play it, and then remember who they have shown you they are.

The way I see it.
I work hard and pay my taxes.
I take care of myself and refuse to be a burdon upon other taxpayers.
I expect few rewards for my good citizenship.
I do expect Police, Fire, Roads (not transportation, I supply my own), Schools, State Parks and Recreation, and basic necessary services.
As for social services, I feel the total of all social service money, food stamps, housing, etc, any person should be allowed to recieve from us, the tax payers, should never be more than 90% of what a person working full time at a minimum wage job earns.

The money is there but the sheisters who people have elected want more. Sometimes I wonder if polititians get the same IRS tax forms we do. It's like they are completely disconnected from common sense.
I'm still looking for the part in the Constitution that says "I've Got To Pay For Him".

This is Flushington State and I do fully expect to be screwed on parks. Nothing I vote for passes in this stupid state and pretty much everything that makes sense to me doesn't to our elected politicians.

OK, That's my venting.
No it's not enough venting.

Thinking about and re-reading some of the other posts on this topic, I have only been thinking as an in state user. There are a lot of out of state users that will not be coming to the state to spend their money in some of the small communities around a lot of campgrounds if they are closed. A whole revenue source eliminated. Great new slogan for tourisum. "Come to Flushington, the parks are closed!"

Now I'm done.

They threatened this for the past 4-5 years & last year got the bill passed for state park funding which begs the question where did the money go ?

To date, no state has never closed all their parks during hard times, not even during the GREAT DEPRESSION.

New Jersey tried this ploy two years ago, Illinois tried it last year (think the did close a few). They threaten to close something near and dear to the public in order to get them to "compromise" by agreeing to higher taxes on something else or higher road tolls, whatever.

I think if any governor had the nads to actually close the parks for real, he would be committing political suicide.

During hard time, the parks are often the ONLY affordable outing for many people. Take that away, and they have nothing.

By all means, write you letters, picket the state capitol, etc. You HAVE to play the game. Just know that they aren't REALLY going to close the parks, and be ready to accept whatever "alternative" tax increase they throw at you.

This issue will be coming up in other states also… most states are in shortfall and will eventually cut something… anything they cut isn’t going to be well received by some and will please others…

Everyone claims they want less government but any cuts bring a groundswell of cries, but only from a few most effected… the real problem is lack of support for what is smart or needed by those not effected…
Writing the officials might help, but again the apathetic public wants to close the door after the horse is out…

I just read a report the other day where school kids have to bring their own toilet paper from home…

JJBIRISH why should I be concerned about schools without toilet paper for the kids if my back side has a nice RV park with toilet paper in a nice clean restroom/shower area?

We all know government is worse at managing money than most taxpayers but government works off of emotions and not common sense because we vote with emotions and not common sense often times.

FWIW, here are my thoughts on this one:

As a Washington resident who uses state parks regularly, I am saddened to see some of my favorite parks on the list. But there are far more parks remaining open than closing. As a property owner, I am annoyed to know that my taxes will certainly increase. But I am in no danger of losing my home to foreclosure, as many seem to be. I will not go hungry and my health insurance will remain in effect.

I understand that our state revenues are in a severe decline and spending must be reduced. The majority of voters chose this governor and legislators, who are charged with making the decisions. I have contacted my legislators about budget cuts, but not about those that affect the places I go to relax.

I am far more concerned about reductions in education and health care than the mothballing of some state parks.

If a correlation could be shown between quality and money spent, I might agree. However, I do not believe that it can. Mismanagement of these departments as well as parks has been the real problem, IMHO.

Everyone wants his own interests/needs protected. There is a group home in our neighborhood that houses two or three residents and is staffed round the clock with at least two attendants. These people are upset because their funds are threatened.

I don't know if the users of parks are numerous enough to sway those Yahoos in Olympia. My belief is that Christine and her gang will not be satisfied until there is a state income tax plus a sales tax. (I hope this is not too political in nature) I read something about a "voluntary $5 charge" for parks added to licenses (I think)

It would be great if we RVers could come up with some kind of "clean up, fix up, paint up" program to help out at some of our favorite parks.
