On the way to Calgary in July we are stopping by the St. Mary KOA on the east side of Glacier. I have seen comments that I should avoid 89 out of Browning due to the terrain. The advice was to use MT 464 from Browning north to 89 and then south to St. Marys. Supposedly 464 crosses flat terrain and is a better drive with a large MH. We are going to use 89 north to cross into Canada. Comments.

That's correct. 89 out of Browning is one of those scenic highways that has lots of scenery but hills and curves and 25 mph speeds.

Yes, correct. We traveled that route last year in a 38'w/toad. We stayed at the St Mary KOA and they were the directions from them. They told us not to use our gps as it would take us on 89. We left Glacier and headed to Banff and Jasper, that was an easy drive. Have a good trip.

464 is a good road as to being mostly flat. Also known as Boarding School and/or Starr School Rd. The only road I tried to avoid was from East Glacier to Kiowa Camp which I remember is going over Looking Glass Pass.
I do not think you would have any problems on 89 out of Browning. Going down Hudson Bay Divide is steeper than going up and has a runaway turnout. I have not lived there for about 40 years so the roads can only be better now. At that time I worked for the State of Montana, Engineering Dept, a lot in that area.
I have to add this: I have a 32/34 Intruder and would not hesitate to go from Browning to East Glacier and then north. You may not be allowed a side trip on "Going to the Sun" highway and if you take 464 and you are driving all the way from Missouri only to bypass the most beautiful part of Glacier, I don't think so.

464 is know as Duck Lake road. If you can drive it as early after daylite as possible on a clear day. Look for the Osprey nest on a pole on the west side just north of Browning. Be sure to fuel up before getting to St Mary. The Steak House in Babb is good and has some net stuff to look at but service is slow. If you are going to Waterton Lakes NP the Chief Mountain RD (Hwy 17) is good with only a few rough spots, a much better view on the Canada side. There are several must see spot just over the border. Don't forget your passports as I think Canada is requiring them know.

I agree 100% with the other posters. If you have the time take your toad across the Going to the Sun road. In fact what would be an all day outing would be to take the Going to the Sun road to West Glacier, then come back up to East Glacier and then take the crooked highway from East Glacier over to St Mary's thereby not driving on any of the same road. Correction on Passports, it is NOT Canada that is insisting on passports, it is your very own Homeland Security that is behind the stricter use of documents. I do want to add that I am in favor of Passports, it makes crossing so much easier and quicker.

Check the rules on taking booze into Canada and then buying in Canada and bringing it back in. As I remember coming back to the US certain fruits or veggies were not allowed. Also call your credit card company and find out which one has the cheapest exchange rate charges. I second the PASSPORT discussion coming back into the US will be the PITA so come back in on a Tues or Thursday and avoid the rush.
