I have a new to me 2001, Holiday 5er with an on board Onan, LP, 5.5 generator. The generator has only a few hours on it, wish it had been run more!
It will start fine and run smooth until a load is applied and then it dies.
Clearly adding load means more fuel so I am heading toward fuel issues. Are there filters on an LP unit same as gas or diesel? Any other thoughts?

That sounds like the governor. Pull the cover off, fire it up - - right in the center is a rod with spring attached. It will move sideways to regulate the speed. Try moving the rod to make sure it is not frozen up - - mine was when it was new. Moving it back and forth several times loosened it up and it has run fine since then.

Forget fooling with the governor. Low oil will make it shut down completely, not run and then shut down under load. I had the exact same problem with the exact same generator. Don't feel too bad about the hours on the genny...I "exercised" mine from the time it was new and it still gave trouble.
After two service trips to Onan certified repair shops I replaced the two-stage switch-over regulator on my LP supply line and have had zero trouble since. About a $60 or less repair you can do yourself.
Good luck.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel,,I had to install separate regulator just for generator. This is what Onan says is necessary. You could light a burner on your stove and watch the flame when the generator tries to load up. Mine would go completely off,,generator takes 11-13 in. wc to run.
