We live in Phoenix and my Dad lives in North Carolina. We are trying to plan a camping trip where we can each drive our motorhomes too and meet up for a week or so half way in between each other. We are trying to plan the trip for the second week of October this year. I am not familiar with East Texas at all, and was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations on nice campgrounds. A few things that would be desirable would be:

Preferrably on a lake or some sort of body of water (my dad has a small boat)

Perferrably a "green" area...I live in the desert and love big trees, grass, and plenty of greenery

Perferrably a somewhat remote place...meaning not in some campground in a big city or big town, but a little more nature like

Perferrably not too far away from either the I-40 or I-10 interstate - but this is really a minor thing...we'll be driving a good distance regardless

Perferrably have water and electrical hook ups

Maybe have some sort of "tourist" attraction within driving distance (hour away maybe) like an amusement park or some sort of area with museum's

Thanks for any advice!

You might want to check out the Texas State Park website:

Here are all the State Parks in East Texas:

Tyler State Park fits your needs precisely. It's not far from town, or I-30, or I-20. Tyler is a very nice city, with an excellent zoo and many other attractions.

Daingerfield State Park, WallEye Park on Lake Cypress Springs (Mt Vernon), or you might want to look into Beavers Bend in SE Oklahoma, we go there quite a lot and really enjoy it, there is a river, a lake, hiking, biking, fishing, boating, swimming, look it up under Oklahoma State Parks. Enjoy your trip and all the trees, I long for the desert again!

There are several COE campgrounds on Lake o the Pines near Jefferson Tx. that meet your criteria. The lake is about 25 miles north of I20. It is a great fishing lake. Jefferson is a historical area, Longview is about 20 mi with city aminities. The lake is located in what the locals call "the big woods".

Lake Tawakoni SP is within 20 miles of I 20, about an hour east of Dallas. It is a nice park, right on the lake. The Texas State Railroad in Rusk has a pretty nice setup although it is further from the interstate. Enjoy your trip; the weather is usually nice that time of year.

Check out Martin Dies Jr. State Park in East Texas. It is west of Jasper on Hwy 190. It may just meet your needs. Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend Lakes are not very far away and have good fishing at both lakes.

Y'all have a great time and safe traveling wherever you go.

All the previous posts are good. You may want to look into Clear Springs Campground on Lake Wright Patman near Texarkana. Beautiful park. It is Corps of Engineers.

Tyler S.P. Gets my vote also. We stayed there the middle of May and really enjoyed it. Big pine trees, great trails and a lake that is perfect for fishing and canoeing. The lake is small enough where a trail leads all the way around it and is about 1.5 miles in length. The park is about 2 miles north of I-20 and I could barely hear the traffic if I listened hard. Like Sluggo said, I think this might be what you are looking for.
