Dempster maintenance is at a fairly high level now, but the condition of the day depends largely on how much rain has fallen in recent days. You can see my photo-log of the highway at http://www.explorenorth.com/library/roads/dempster-photos.html.

We drove the Dempster (and have the Tshirt to prove it) 3 summers ago.
We experienced everything from deep gooey mud to dust, and lots of it!
Also on our way south there were a couple of forest fires burning so we had smoke. It was a great experience. Just make sure your tires are in top notch condition, carry a minimum of 1 good spare (2 if you can)and keep your speed down. When a vehicle is approaching, pull over as far as you can and go very slow to minimum the risk of a broken windshield.

We stayed 3 maybe 4 nights in the c.g. right in town. It is quite pleasant - try to get site #1 which overlooks a lake. There is a decent grocery store and a few restaurants just a couple of blocks away.

Also it is wise to wash your truck/rv as soon as possible to get the grime and salt off it. There is a very good do it yourself car wash on the main road going out of town (further north - not the road you come in on).

Enjoy your trip - the scenery is beautiful.
