I am a Canadian who loves to spend my winters in the South. Last winter spent 4 months in Arizona and New Mexico. I talked to many people who were workampers who told me because I am Canadian ,I was not allowed to participate. All I want to do is earn my campsite fees plus whatever other benefits available without going on a regular payroll. I am a single fit 67 year old male with a wide range of abilities. Any ideas would be welcome.

6 months is the main thing for you to be concerned with.....a lady we met who works with the company we do said, her main concern was every 6 months she had to get back across the border. That and exchanging money when it is to your benefit..

as far as work camping figure out where you want to spend time or go to....figure out which facilities/campgrounds/RV parks are there and contact them....many people contact a place they are familiar with or you are known at.....also you need to decide if you want to be paid or volunteer in exchange for a site, some RV parks offer a combination of both...just make sure you figure what the site would cost if paying so you know what you are being reimbursed for....

I'm sure there is some sort of green card that you need to have so the governments are happy.....but that is probably a routine kinda thing.

Maybe the people who told you no way, don't want the competition for the jobs....hahahahaha.....

good luck and happy trails

My camp hosting partner (he and his wife) were from Vancouver Island BC. They hosted with me each winter on the beach in Calif for Ca. State Parks. They loved it. Of course it was a volunteer position with no pay, but the full hookup site on the beach was provided. We worked a 3 day on and 3 day off schedule so it left them a LOT of time to explore and do things or just relax in great weather. No special documentation needed/required beyond the 6 month rule in country/state and passport to enter or leave the country. They wound up liking it so much I was able to get them as winter anchor point in the area and no longer hosting, but spending their winters here now. I've met several hosts within the system from Canada. There are no restrictions on Canadians hosting for Calif. state parks that I know of beyond filling our a one page application, normal background check and being finger printed since you handle money at times. Here's a link below for the current openings and more information on Calif. state parks volunteer hosts....

As a Canadian you would be able to work as a Workamper. (I have 3 couples of Friends that are Canadian and workamp, They just can't earn money, then they need a green card). Encore is now paying workampers, who then pay for site and electric out of that pay, and at the end of the year they will get a 1099. No taxes are withheld, just a contract worker. Which puts alot of Canadians and people on SS out of working in their parks, which then floods the other places with workers looking for work. Not sure how long Encore will go with this policy, but it sure hurts alot of Canadians and people on SS. Find a park that you like and see if they hire workampers. Most just offer site and electric for pay, a barter system. Just start checking. Season usually runs from 1 November to 1 April, so that should be ok with your 6 month deal.

Hope this helps.

Most of our Federal Parks such as Army Corps of Engineers will allow you to volunteer in exchange for your campsite. You do need to be in the country legally but since you are assisting us while vactioning you do not need a work visa. If you want more information on our programs in Texas please email me dorie.murphy@usace.army.mil

In addition to the USACE the national wildlife refuges use many volunteers, most state parks do so, and many county parks as well. In nine years and 27 tours as a resident volunteer, we have never been asked for our citizenship. If you are willing to work a few hours for your site, you can easily find some location that needs volunteer help and who supplies an RV site with full hook-ups. Many agencies also have laundry equipment for volunteers to use, some offer internet connections and frequently there are other benefits.

Come one down! We can always use more willing helpers.
