Normally there will only vacuum break valves in the GREY plumbing that is further than 6ft from the tank vent.

I have never seen one on the black tank.

Good chance your toilet blade is not sealing, are you able to keep water in the bowl?

You could also have a toilet flange seal leaking, in this case have to lift the toilet. If you lift the toilet, don't use a home wax seal, just is not designed for RV use. The proper seal is a foam rubber gasket, buy it at any RV dealer.

Also check to see if the black tank vent is properely seated in the top of the tank, too low and when the contents reach the vent it plugs the vent and odor will backup into the RV.

Check to see if any sinks or tub is plumbed into the black tank, this does happen and if the traps dry out you will get odor.

make sure the traps all have water in em, sink, tub and water in the toilet as well. do yo still get the oder then? if you do, then the vent you found may be the culprit. now the vaccum breaker you are talkin about.....not sure it is that, but the vent. both tanks/systems should be vented, usually to the roof. do you have 2 or more roof vents up there?

Check and see if you have a factory installed black tank flush. That requires a vacuum breaker in the line and it's usually in the bathroom. I've had them behind a panel and also under the sink, high up. Never had a problem with them though. I'd look to a poor sealing toilet or a dry trap.

When you flush there may be a slight poof of air that comes back through the opening. If you have any ceiling vent fans running they can pull air from the tank.

We have a vacuum breaker on our DSDP, in fact both DSDP's have had them. On ours it's for the black tank rinsing system. I've had the valves fail on both units. First one was replaced under warranty. The last one I took apart and cleaned it up, sprayed it with WD-40 and maybe silicone spray and put it back. Seems to be working fine.

My last camper had two vent pipes, the camper I have now has one vent pipe and one vacuum breaker for the gray tank under the bath sink.

I had to replace the vacuum breaker for the gray tank a few years back.

Actually, the item you are probably refering to is a mechanical vent. I have 3 on my 5th wheel, one under the bath sink, one under the kitchen sink and one under the shower. And yes, if they go bad it will allow sewer gas into the trailer. I have only one thru the roof vent for both my tanks.
