Just wondering what is the ideal size and set up for a generator in a larger 5th wheel? Is a portable better that a permanent mounted one?
What wattage? One large one or two small ones and what make and model?
Thanks Ellis

1 ac or 2? do you want to run the ac and microwave at the same time? hair drier? coffee pot? toaster?

3600 running watts (not surge) is 30 amp service. 2 ac's and a microwave will usually trip a 30 amp braker. If you can do power management, a 3k, or maybe even 2k can work. The built in generators are usualy 5.5k, some 6+.

If you have 50 amp service, a 3K generator isn't near enough. I recommend a single Onan 5.5K, permanently mounted one. If can be either gas or diesel, your choice. If your tow vehicle is a diesel, I would recommend that your generator be the same. That will cover everything, including two A/Cs, if you have them. If you have a "large" fiver, you should have plenty of room in the front compartment for your generator and other things you want to take with you. If room is at a premium, then a portable one would be ok, but not nearly as efficient.

If you have a single A/C unit I'd go with two Honda EU2000i generators and the kit to connect them. Run one when you don't need A/C, two when you do. Very light, easily portable, fuel efficient, was roughly the same cost as a single unit of equal capacity but I haven't shopped them in awhile.

I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations.

Our built-in Onan is a 5500W Marquis Gold - able to run both AC's, convection oven, coffee pot, 42" TV, etc. without a problem...

Our Onan is a gas model and our TV is diesel...wish the Onan was diesel but not a problem...the looks on the faces of the gas attendants is priceless when I tell them I need both gas and diesel...

I agree with SKnight if you only have 1 AC. I did my homework & got EF3000iSEB and it works great. What I did not think of it is just to big to pick up & move or leave with 5er. If I had it to do over I would go with two EU2000i Honda or Yamaha EF2000iS. They are light weight under 50lb. you can pick them up & leave them with your rig if one of you wants to stay home & the other wants to go somewhere. Also like he said run both when running AC & one when not.
