Is it normal for you lugs and rims to get too hot to touch only after about 15 minutes of stop and go traffic? I just brought my travel trailer home from storage because we're leaving tomorrow on a trip and I notice that the lug nuts were too hot to touch. I took the lug nut caps off to check the torque that's when I notice how hot they were plus how hot the rims were.

Thanks,

The very act of stopping generates heat and a lot of it. The rims getting hot is normal, how hot is a bit subjective. So long as you can touch it without getting physically burned then it's OK. I was a mechanic for 17 years and as tough as my hands were I'd get lugs that were too hot to touch when everything was normal.

You start getting into a danger area once you can smell the brakes cooking and actually start seeing smoke rising.

So long as you could touch them without getting a blister then they're OK.

I don't get lost, I investigate alternative destinations.

Stop and go traffic can heat them up very hot.
