Looking for help. I've done a search, but can't seem to find any information or ideas on how and where to mount and carry a 5 gal gas can when I'm not pulling my cargo trailer. Any and all ideas would be appreciated.

Moose Nugget,
Search the site further. There are many good threads with pictures and ideas.

For me, I have three 2.5 gallons units I slide inbetween the camper and bed through the access door. I like them there as they stay cool and out of site.

I always liked Whazoo's method-

The cans and holders are available at Adventure Trailers.

Here was my solution.

RE: carrying gas for generators?

here's a post on a mod I did not to long ago. Needed a place for a gas can for the Honda gen. So I mounted one behind the passanger side skirt. Gas can holder is bolted in backed with some pink styrofoam as a cushion. The black strap is connected to camper higher up so as to better hold can. by the strap and backup bungee. cord

That's where I carry my small ones, too.

I use a hitch rack for chairs, cot, & steps.
I will not carry my old style Gott plastic cans on the rack. I had 3 nozzles & caps stolen when they stopped selling the replacement parts. Luckily I stocked up at a clearance sale many years ago. They are still my favorite gas cans , uh containers.
I used to love jerry cans, but had too much issues with them rusting out in the seams.

Thanks for the ideas. One problem is with my Adventurer 90FWS camper. I don’t have access to the sides so can’t put anything in there. The idea with the hitch carrier is good but it adds more length to the overall rig that the ferry charges for. We are planning to take the Alaska ferry this coming year and want the fuel but not the extra costs. The idea from DWeikert is really good and for me practical and I'm going to look closer at that. I’m also entertaining the idea of going to the 2.5 gal cans, but carry two of them on the roof.

Hi Walt,

We just took our camper on the ferry from Valdez to Cordova and then Cordova to Whittier. When checking in they asked if we had any extra propane tanks other than the ones installed in the camper, gasoline and guns. When I said yes to all 3 they put a red hazardous notice under my windshield wiper and told us that when we got parked on the car deck we would be told to put our extra propane and gas in a special fireproof locker on the car deck. When it didn't happen that way I asked one of the workers on the car deck if I needed to do that and he told me not on the new, fast ferry Chenega as the car deck is sealed from the rest of the ferry and has it's own special fire suppression system. However you do have to do it on the older ferries according to him so you will probably want to have the gas cans somewhere fairly handy. As to the length of our rigs they didn't check it or pay any attention to the bicycles we had hanging on the rear of our camper that increased our length a couple of feet over what I had put on our paperwork. As for the guns that I had in the cab of the truck they didn't want to see them, they just told me to lock the truck.

The ferry trip was spectacular,

Chuck

Speaking of Fuel Tanks, Any Canadians know where to get the 5 gal Military plastic type fuel tanks made by Sceptor in the Sarnia or Windsor, Ontario areas? Apparently they can not be sold in the USA any longer, although they might be available by private individuals. I want to mount a couple of those on our FWC Eagle like Whazoo has done.

Thanks
Jim
