I was on 26 last week and that construction between Dubois and Moran is really, really rough and will delay you at least an hour. There is also construction just east of Riverton--shorter delay. Otherwise that route is a good road and I have no idea why your wife should have any concern about the Wind River Reservation. We stayed at Riverton overnight, right on the edge of the Reservation and it was quiet. There are plenty of good areas to camp around Dubois. I would take 26 and plan to stop in Dubois and then face the construction west of there in the morning--no reason why you cannot be in Yellowstone by early afternoon from Dubois.
In all my travels thru Reservations in the West I have never felt uncomfortable or noticed any rowdiness on reservations. Now, sometimes in some areas you have to watch the traffic carefully for possible DUI drivers but that is more a problem in the South West. Mostly, the roads are good, the people pleasant, and the drive scenic. Enjoy.

We just heard from people around here to stay out of the reservations in the South West and in northern Minnesota due to their drunken rowdy-ness. I was just worried all of them are that way. That's also why we're avoiding Sturgis until the rally is over, don't want anything to happen to our kids, nor do we need our kids seeing naked/drunk people riding motorcycles. But it's a beautiful town when the rally isn't there and I'd like to go there again.

My Mom stated that hwy 26 was the route we took one year when we went to Yellowstone (when I was 2) and has said what you have said, it is beautiful. That will probably be the way we go.

Can definitely confirm this. They were alternating taking batches of cars through a couple of construction sections when I came that way a month ago.

That said, I would take this road again tomorrow, if possible. It is a beautiful drive. Relax and enjoy the scenery.

Have tent camped at Boysen Res. SP at the south edge of the Wind River Reservation south of Thermopolis with no problems at all. Freinds of mine get the reservation fishing license for $80 and say it is well worth it. Visit Thermopolis. They have free and commercial hot springs and a nice state park to wander through. The commercial hot springs have great water slides. When we were there the cactus were in bloom and very pretty.

The route from Dubois to Moran over Togwotee Pass will be under construction until 2011 or so. It is rough and there may be long delays. But it is very scenic. Also, there are construction delays between Lizard Creek campground and Flagg Ranch M-F up to 30 mins. They don't seem to work much on Sat-Sun. Saw a griz at Flagg Ranch on the east side of the road Sun. and a visitor had some good got shots of it on Thurs.

I read the tar and chip job from the south entrance to YNP to Lewis Lk is completed. It had generated some very long delays in the late evening. Still take it slow so you don't get a cracked windshield. I suspect there is still a bit of loose gravel there.

Have a good trip.

Thank you everyone for your construction alerts. That is extremely helpful for us to determine our route. Anyone heard anything about construction on Hwy 20 across Nebraska??

Don't know about the construction but I will recommend the route. It is one of the prettiest and most relaxing drives you will ever take in America. Construction or not, I wouldn't miss that drive.

We were in the Black Hills two years ago, visited Sturgis during bike week but didn't see any of the naked/drunk people riding motorcycles through the streets, must have been their day off. We left Hill City and drove down to Lusk and then west through Casper and 26 all the way to Jackson, very nice drive but there was a lot of construction west of Dubois even then, we ended up staying a couple of days in Dubois because we thought it was great little town. Once you get to Moran Junction (?) the drive North to the park is great. If we ever get back to the Black Hills we would definitely do that route again on the way back

I looked on the 511 website. Does not look like there will be any construction issues on Hwy 20. I have in-laws in Dubuque. We used to take I 80 all the time. Took Hwy 20 last year. Will take 20 from now on. Nice relaxing drive. My only concerns with this route would be during harvest.

LOL This sounds as bad as the woman from N.J. that I talked with in Chadron Neb. last year. She and her husband weren't going to drive through the Badlands because of all the tourists bodies that had been found there after being murdered by the Indians. Yes this is what she'd been told by friends so she wasn't going to risk her life there. I continue to be amazed at what some people believe.

There's probably no other place you could go that has as much law enforcement as Sturgis during the rally. No need to worry. And in case you weren't aware of it, many, if not most, of those "bikers" are professionals who take a week or two to pretend they're tough guys.

I remember running into our funeral director and his wife at the gas pumps several years ago during bike week. I knew him and his wife well. We attended the same church and were both members of the local Rotary Club. But I knew them both as people who dressed to the "T" -- him in his dark suits and her in business suits or gowns. Not that day, however. Both were wearing their "biker threads" and looked like they must surely have been members of Hells Angels. I'd not have recognized them if they hadn't spoken first.

As for the nakedness, you could find some of that in the campgrounds, but on the road or even in downtown Sturgis, you won't see anything that you wouldn't see on any public beach. I wouldn't worry about avoiding Sturgis other than if you need a camping spot and don't already have it reserved.

At any rate, you said you were leaving this week (Aug. 9-15). Bike week is over. Done. Kaput.

Here we are in Spearfish, SD on our 3rd day of our journey. Did find heavy construction on hwy 26/287 in the Tetons, but none up until then on 26. There are several spots on interstate 80 at one lane. i-90 also has several areas down to one lane.

fyi- We're staying the night here at a hotel and the clerk told me that if we had come just a week to 2 days ago the room rate was over $100 more than what we are paying tonight. Is that a rip off or what?
