I chuckle as the pros & cons threads are similar to DW and my comparisons of campgrounds. We often do not agree owing to the venus & mars thing.
We used many KOAs on our recent trip to South Dakota Black Hills. We only agreed that 1 was a complete dump and split on the rest.

Maybe it had been raining a lot more than normal.

That was exactly the problem. I live 60 miles from there, and my wife and I enjoy the camping experience at Devils Tower 2-3 times each year. We usually stay at the KOA one of those times, and we've never had a bad experience.

Anyway, back to the problem: Rain. Record rainfall. My neighbor was telling me about it earlier this week. I forget how much rain they had, but I think it was more in one rain storm than what usually falls during July and August combined.

We just returned this afternoon from a little camping trip to Devils Tower. We prefer the campground inside the Monument, as we enjoy campfires and don't need hookups. Unfortunately there's also a fire ban for the whole county, so we couldn't even light our charcoals. Luckily we had a small gas grill along so we were able to burn our hotdogs to perfection, but it's just not the same when you can't sit around a big ol' wood fire.

Just got back from a weekender from Sweetwater, Tn. we stayed at the KOA and really enjoyed it. Was very quite, plenty of playground area for small kids, great pancake breakfast (all u can eat) for 3 bucks. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Hope we get lucky and never hit one of the bad KOA's. So far we have always had pleasant experiences with KOA.

Mud at your door classifies as a bad experience? It sounds like they atleast attempted to fix the problem. Guess they should have rolled out a red carpet.

It always amazes me when someone (in this case a new member) tries to give us a heads up on a problem that they ran into and get such negative answers. No wonder so many new members post one message and never return. Personally I would not want a mud covered site at KOA prices and would expect gravel or pavement or in this case (to answer quote) yes, a red carpet to at least cover the mud at the doorstep!

We have stayed at many KOA's over the years and have found them on a whole to be better than comparable local campgrounds. This summer we stayed at the one in Niagara Falls, Casey Illinois, Branson Missouri and Terre Haute Indiana and our experiences were all great.
We did stay also at the Devil's Tower back in 2001 and enjoyed it very much and the people were very accomodating. We were there on July 4th, so enjoyed a very nice fire works display right in fron of the campground. The view there is super.

Vote with your wallet. Karen and I stayed in a few KOA's on our Journey. We found a few we liked and few we didn't. But then that was true of other CG's as well. Always remember, YOU are the customer. If you are not treated in a reasonable manner, don't leave any of YOUR money there...

I have stayed at plenty of KOA's and in general have been satisfied. But...they are a bit more expensive. KOA and Walmart are often very entertaining threads (very predictable too)
