I'm also having really good results with my MacBook on the road. If has worked with all but one wifi connection and the data connection for everything else was bad at that spot too.

You need an Intel processor to run MagicJack and the better the connection the better the quality of the phone sound.

Thanks for the info. Still investigating.

+ for Skype-
My oldest son travels around the world a lot and he uses Skype.
It seems easy to use and set up and I don't think I have to sign up for a package. Just pay for what I use. $.02/min.

- for Skype-
To use the video part, you need a dual core processor PC. I'm trying to resist loading any Windows things in my Mac. I've just had my Mac for a short time so I don't know if I will succeed in that regard.

This whole thing started because I recently upgraded to HD and just got my first Verizon bill and it was close to $300/mo for the landline, 3 cells, direcTv HD and USB Broadband. This is without any usage charges.

We are headed down to the Verizon store to investigate pre-paid cells. Since most of my calls are to other Verizon cells, most of my calls are free and we only use about 25 mins. of our present plan of 700 mins./mo. This is the cheapest plan they have. I want to stick with Verizon because they have great coverage. My brother has Sprint and my sister has Cellular and they are constantly borrowing my cell when we are camping and they can't get a signal. My brother can't even get a signal at his house and he continues to use Sprint. How dumb is that. But that's another story.

I use Skype 2.8 for Mac (leopard) You will need a usb headset like the one pictured here:
Plantronics
Since the input on a Mac is for a powered microphone a regular headset boom mike won't work! The Plantronics headset comes with a USB dongle that acts as a sound card and pre amps the microphone. (found this out after trying to use two regular headsets)
The sound quality is better the farther away you make your calls to.
For $2.95 a month I got rid of my land line and cut my cell minute usage in half.
Of course you have to have your computer running to send and receive calls.
I get emails when I have a message waiting.
Over a good wifi connection, this setup works quite well.
Your milage may vary.
Best,
Arborist
