Hello all I am looking on planning a trip to Yellowstone for 2010 and would like some feed back. Its tough for my better half to alot of time off from work in one shot so here is what I am thinking. 3 weeks...4 days travel with a stop at Mt Rushmore, 5 days in Yellowstone, 2 days in Grand Tetons, 1 day in Jackson Hole, and 4 days back to NY leaving me a couple of days to spare just in case. What does everyone think? can I pull it off? and whats the best route?

I would try to add 2 days in Glacier N.P. and cut Yellowstone to three days; day one take a tour of Northern Route, day 2 on own, day 3 tour of Southern Route.
We left the driving to others since we could afford to pay them for the experience. Lots of RVers drive around Yellowstone adding hundreds of miles to their cars and agony to the driver and do not receive the benefit of the guides narration of what they are seeing.

That is pleanty of time if all you want to do is a "drive by". I've taken a NUMBER of drive-by vacations in my time and they sure do beat not going.

Do-able, but you'll have some long driving days to get there & back, and remember there's lots of driving IN Yellowstone as well. Unless you have a shopper in the family AND you want to do some serious hiking or want to take a river float in the Tetons, you probably won't need 2 full days there plus 1 full day in Jackson. (Jackson's not that big.) I applaud your plan to spend a week in Yellowstone & the Tetons, as there is a lot to see, but you could cut a day or two off that total if need be. IMO you might enjoy the vacation a bit better with an added couple days' transit (i.e. 5 days each, out & back) - just a little more relaxing pace.

1 day in Tetons and Jackson Hole is plenty unless like another poster said you want to Hike or do River Float. I also agree that 3-4 days in Yellowstone is enough. Would go to Galcier or head south to Moab or to Colorado RMNP. Just go and enjoy this beautiful scenery, because if you do nothing but drive it will b worth it!

Three weeks gives you a total of 23 days, counting the weekends at the beginning and end. IMO, 4 days each way out and back is going to be very difficult, as it's at least 2,200 miles each way. If you plan for 5 days in each direction you will still have 13 days for sightseeing, which will give you a good feel for the area. I wouldn't add Glacier to this trip, as you already have enough on your plate for the time available.

What he said.

I'd cut a day from Yellowstone and one from the Tetons/Jackson and add them to your Black Hills stay.

Thanks for all of the great info, I have adjusted the amount of days we will be staying in each area. We are planning on stopping to see Mt Rushmore and Crazyhorse anything else we should try to stop and see on the way to Yellowstone or on the way out after we stop at the Grand Tetons/Jackson???

Badlands NP, Wall Drug, Custer State Park, Pigtail Bridges (cant think of road # but anyone there will tell oyu where the pigtail bridges are) that's all in SD

we stop every year in Yellowstone for 10 days and have never done anything twice and won't ever see it all...depends if you canoe, fish, hike or stay in the car.

tetons, ditto, a week a year for life and you'd never make a dent in it.

hit rushmore late enough to stay for lighting at night, why not? you're there already, see it lit at night.

crazy horse is an hour tops, custer Sp is a half day if you dont leave the car, wall drug is a hour or a day depending on the type people you are.

50 mph average in 10 hrs is a 500 mile a day ride and yes, there are some that think that is a rough day, we jsut drove from williamsburg, VA to Vermont and the folks with us made that a 2 day drive, to each their own, make it fun or you wont do it agian.

We've been to the Yellowstone/Grand Teton region three times in the last 5 years, including this last summer. Our ratio has been 6 to 1, with 6 days in Yellowstone and 1 day in Grand Teton. At best, Jackson is a couple hours stop on the way, not a destination in my opinion.

We've done two floats on the Snake River through Grand Teton (highly recommended VERY early in the morning) and late morning hikes. Never have had the urge to stay longer at Grand Teton.

Can't say the same about Yellowstone. Have stayed there for 17 nights at this point and still want to return in a couple years (would do it every year, time permitting) Just so much to see, when compared to Grand Teton.

As for Glacier, yes, I'd recommend a couple days minimum. Our first visit to Glacier was after Yellowstone in 2004, just 2 nights, enough to get a taste of Glacier. Stayed 5 nights this summer, again, after Yellowstone.
