Decided to change my own oil rather than using the dealer and when I removed the drain plug, I found they had rigged a hard fiber washer (which had split) instead of the usual copper gasket. Called dealer, and asked about buying the copper gasket and/or a new plug. Long story short, they don't stock either. Since they were the original culprits who left off the copper gasket, I went online and ordered a new plug and gasket from a different dealer. Came in today, and the new plug has a flat shoulder and flat copper washer. The one in my truck, has a beveled shoulder, like it is countersunk into the pan. Called the supplying dealer and he confirmed that is the only plug Ford uses and should be correct. Has anyone run across a plug with a beveled shoulder? I must admit, my plug looks like the bevel may have been fabricated out of some type of hard material, because I can scrape it with a knife and it seem to shave off some of the material. I am going to drain all the new oil out, and do some serious looking as to rather or not the flat shouldered plug will work..again, has anyone run across a beveled plug in their 6.0?
By the way, when I removed the oil filter, they had also left the broken end of an old filter still in the removable cap so I have been bypassing oil around the top of the filter. What geniuses!!!!

Is it possible that someone has changed to a different oil pan on your truck? Mine is just like you describe from the parts dealer.

I doubt oil pan has been changed. I bought it used but low milage and oasis report showed no previous work. Thanks for replies.

Someone could have easily put the wrong drain plug in while in for service. I have noticed when I was in some of these quick lube joints that they always seem to have an assortment of old drain plugs in the shop. Just another good reason to do it yourself.

Change your own oil in the 6.0, it's about the easiest vehicle on the planet.

Change your oil plug with a Fumoto valve, it will save time and energy and not drop so much oil. Also makes getting oil samples dead dumb simple. http://www.fumotousa.com/nseries.htm

When you replace your oil filters use only Motorcraft or Fram filters, NOT WIX/Napa or Amsoil. Neither of these aftermarket oil filters meet OEM specs and can and will most probably damage your engine.

Good luck.
