have to buy a new one maybe 4 or 5 ft length, any recommendations if one brand is better than the other.

It's been some years since really using the CB even though we still keep one in the truck but I will have to say that the K40 is one of the better models.

No recommendation on brand but two considerations I will give you

Generally (up to 9 foot)the longer the better

And on motor homes you may need to use a "No Ground Plane"(NGP) antenna.

I would recommend FireStik. The information that they give on their website is will worth the visit. It will guide you in selecting a proper antenna for your situation regardless of where you make the final purchase. I did buy mine from them and am very happy with it.

I have a Wilson 'Lil Will' for my pickup, my articulated truck at work, and a couple of loaders at work. They seem to work fine and don't cost a fortune. ($27.00)
As far as length, we have done a couple on my supervisors' truck that are "assembled" from parts bought from a radio shop in the area that also does most of the radios for the police and the owner gave us a generic mast and said to cut it to 47.25 inches for optimum performance.

I have the K 40 magnetic mount in the bed of my pick up between cab and fifth wheel hitch. 99.9% of the time we just listen to find out what the problem is when traffic stops. The language the truckers use will make a sailor blush. I'm a retired trucker. 28 years over the road. In my 18 wheeler I used the Wilson.
