WOW!!! Homelessdrue and Wolfpac you really hit home with your statement. As I think about this more and more I have come to terms today is a day that I will never-ever get back... one less day of my life.

Yep, back in 1966, I tried to be the Boss, but it didn't work out.

I surprised my wife and family on my 62nd birthday by announcing that I was retiring in a couple of months, and my last day at work would fall on our anniversary.

I had to give it some thought wheather to retire or not since I had the best job in that industry, BUT, when I saw that I would make a lot more money retiring then staying with the company, it was a no brainer to stay. I am really enjoying my retirement and traveling a lot.

How hard was it to retire? Not hard at all!!
The DW and I planned, scheduled and acted, and we have not looked back! (...well, except in the rear view mirror now and then).

My wife was really surprised when I actually retired. We had talked about it for several years, but she never felt like we had enough stashed away. She can be a worrier When the time actually came, I had to reassure her that we would be just fine...relax and enjoy it.

Prior to the retirement I had worked from home for six years, so it really wasn't an adjustment.

"The Decision" is serious, and DH and I are also struggling with it. It's not so much the finances as it is giving up the identity of "who" you've been for 38 years.

That struck a chord with me. I had a good job directing the engineering and manufacturing of specialized automated material handling machinery. Over a few years, I had got rid of some non-performers and hired/promoted others that were quite competent. Business was setting records for sales and profit. But there was some stress and a 65 mile drive (one-way) to work and back. I was gone the month I turned 63-1/2 as I could use Cobra for health coverage until I hit 65 and medicare.

Now I joke that the biggest thing that I miss since retiring is that nobody listens to me anymore-----because it's just me and the DW. And she's never listened to me!!

I think you're wise to ask about retirement. For many people, myself included, it wasn't easy. You need to mentally prepare for it and expect there to be some difficulties.
I think the more satisfying your job the harder it is to adjust to retirement.
The solution is to plan for a satisfying retirement. for us it was fulltime RVing, new adventures every day and lots of interesting places and people.
After three years we're beginning to get the hang of it.
I wish you well.
