I know that all of us RV.Net Forum Members are intellegent, well read and savy consumers that would never fall for the scams currently shown on TV every 15 minutes of so.

As we all know, Extended Warranties are big right now...a veritable mine field to a potential buyer considering these flim-flam smoke and mirror out right scams. 16,000 complaints to the State Attorney Generals office in just ONE state!

Owner of one of the Extended Service Companies was indited several times in different States for fraud....is still doing it in a huge TV Commercial blitz in the USA using ill informed NASCAR drivers in the advertisements. This guy spent time in jail for fraud, yet he is currently building himself a 5.5 million dollar mansion in Missouri.

There are 92 extended service companies operating in St. Louis area!

Telemarketing, direct mail, TV commercials, etc...Beware of any mailings that appear to come from your automobile manufacturer offering extended warranty coverage. Per the BBB thousands of Consumers state that they can not cancel the contract as they were told. Plus the investigator stated that there are exclusions in the contract so that “a very, very limited range of things are covered.”

When an investigator asked for a copy of the Extended Warranty over the phone to the salesman, in order to better understand what was covered he replied “We don’t actually send out any paperwork without receiving a down payment,” He said once I paid, the policy would be mailed to me within seven to 10 business days.

If you're still going to do this, go thru a car dealership, as in most cases it is not only cheaper, and you can negotiate the cost...but often backed by the Automobile manufacturer.

I wouldn't buy an extended warranty for any product; period. A friend who worked for Sears once told me the they are the best money maker the company sells. If I can't afford to pay for repairs as needed, then I can't afford the product.

Before I retired I worked for a major tire manufacture, as a retail operations manager, and extended warranties are a retailers "cash cow " we sold road hazard warranty, about 75% of our retail customers bought the road hazard, the money all went into a specail account, any tires that were replaced that mounth came out of that account, which really amounted to a very small percentage, the rest was pure profit, easy money, and went right to the bottom line, most retail people work on a bonus system so they really push the warranty, more money on the bottom line is more in the employees paycheck......

I never buy extended warranties, but i have seen them come in handy. My youngest daughter and her hubby bought a new chevy, they called me about the extended warranty and I told them I never buy one,but since they plan on keeping this car a long time and don't have a lot of "extra" cash it might be good for them. They bought it and just outside of the MFG warranty they lost their transmission, over $3500 to replace. They didn't pay a dime. If not for the warranty they could not have had it fixed (or I probably would have had to pay). The point is if your going to get one, get it from the dealer, bargain like you do on the price of the car, read all the exclusions and fine print. It's basically insurance, their betting you won't need it, you have some comfort knowing you have it. The odds are obviously in their favor, but the same is true of accident insurance and home insurance.

I'd hate to actually call one of these businesses, but I can't help wonder what the premium is for a 'free' new transmission.

They didn't call anyone, the dealer handled it. I can tell you the price before negotiating was $1010 for a no deductible full coverage, not just power-train. They cut that in half, but I'm sure they made some of it up someplace else, that's just part of the game. Difference in this situation is they could handle the little extra payment for the coverage, they could not handle the out of pocket $3500. As I said, for me I take my chances, but I can afford these surprises, some can't.

Same here! I go the extra mile and asked them, didn't they make the product right? As there's an manufacturer warranty normally.
