In my opinion, once you go that way, you'll wish you had gone through Atlanta. When you go through Atlanta, don't take the bypass, go straight through. While the traffic is heavy, it usually moves pretty well, IMHO. I'd much rather drive through Atlanta than Chicago. If you are going south through Atlanta, the worst part is going to be the construction on I-85 south of the city. Stay away from the afternoon rush hours and you should be fine.

I agree, I have been thru Atlanta a bunch of times and my experience also is don't take the loop, it is too long, too congested and pretty rough surface at times. I go straight thru but at non rush hour times.

We've been going to Fla. for 11 yrs. At the suggestion of AAA we took the bypass the first two years - it was a nightmare with all the 18 wheelers and all the 4 wheelers who seem to feel that cars coming on from the on ramps have right-of-way over the thru traffic. Then someone on this forum recommended going straight thru Atlanta, just avoid rush hours. We've been doing that ever since with no problems.
Here's another tip - as long as there is more than one of you in your vehicle you can use the HOV lane and avoid all the lane changing, etc.
This has been discussed several times in the past - try searching on Atlanta to find more discussions.

I drove thru Atlanta one year and vowed never again. It's the bypass for me in the future. There is a lot of traffic and no straight run of road in the whole town.

Atlanta is not so bad. Go right thru, avoid thr bypass and rush hour traffic, just take your time. Mpls St Paul, Chicago or Dallas,Ft.

There is paving going on at night and on weekends currently on the Downtown Connector. BAD traffic. Check with DOT web site before you decide to go through town - and I usually tell everyone to go straight through.

An alternative that may be a bit easier would be to take I40 west to Hwy 74 over to Cleveland, TN where you can pick up I75 south. Most of Hwy 74 is easy dual lane except for a section through the Nantahala Gorge and then another as you near TN. The Nantahala Gorge isn't that bad but does have a slight grade and a few curves, but I never gave it a thought even with my 35' fiver. Don't know anything about the TN section, but it shouldn't be to bad as the worst part of 64 is east of Franklin.

Went through Atlanta on Sunday morning with a 30' 5vr with no problems. Came back through on weekday and took the bypass. I hated the bypass. Jim
