Yes, tell them to call 911 and make a cop come.
Unless you want you and your neighbor entangled in massive litigations and most probably, criminal criminal. Let the professionals, COPS, protect your property. If and when neighbors see Proceedings activities on or near suspicious your call the police.
You can not contract away liability ever. And the thought of giving another person a signed document to do whatever to protect whatever property should scare the property out of sane persons.

Most Police or Sheriff's Departments have a "Vacation Watch" program. You tell them (in writing) when you're leaving, when you're returning, what lights are left on or on timer, what vehicles will be there and who is authorized to be on the property.
They'll check the property (usually just a drive-by) every day or a few times a day, depending on the location and traffic permitting. Sometime's they assign this task to their Volunteer Citizen Patrols, who'll call in the real thing if something is amiss.
When I'm on the road, I'll always have at least one vehicle left at home. I have a friend come by a couple times a week and jockey them around so it looks somewhat occupied.
(A police car parked out front all the time helps, too )

We put a "vacation watch" on our house with the city police. Some of our "vacations" are three or four months. On the form we file, is a place to put the name of anyone who you authorize to have access to your property. The police check the house (including driving up the drive way to behind the house) several times each day and several times each night. On several occasions, the police roll up in the driveway just after we get in, just to make sure it's us. Neighbors say they know when we are gone by the police presence on the street! Also, near neighbors know we are gone and will call police if anything looks suspicious.
That's just one advantage to living in a small city!

Hmmmm....let's see.
I'm going to expect a neighbor to get up in the middle of the night and come over to my house to confront intruders and potentialy end up hurt or dead, all for saving my stero.
I don't don't see many takers on that issue.

Did the OP ever define "protecting"?
We have two neighbors with keys who are checking our property and would call us if say... a tree went through our roof. Beyond check and call I do not expect them to "protect".
My first reaction was that this is not needed. Then I wondered what might happen if Sgt. James Crowley ever ran across an authorized house protector?

From OP: I did not define Protect. Simply looking for something better than telling neighbor to "protect my stuff." For example storm damage to roof or a broken window. My letter might give OK up $2,000 to protect my property-no questions asked. I'm not sure everyones trusted neighbor would spend money without asking first.
And yes Texas has a law that basically says you can use deadly force to protect my property-if I tell it is OK to "protect my property." I am not asking anyone to do that but I want them covered should they choose to do so.
I was thinking surely someone else at RVU has done something other than verbal instructions. If not maybe I can get enough ideas from your input.

You're worrying way too much. Have an alarm system installed, it will monitor your windows for glass breakage and sets off the alarm. If it goes off the company has a list furnished by you as to order of notification before they call LE dispatch. Trade cell numbers with your neighbor. As to roof damage, if a strong storm hits and you get damage to the roof have your neighbor call you and then you call your insurance company with your neighbors name and number as a point of contact.
As I said in an earlier post we travel a lot and for extended times, once for two years and with the Alarm system we have (installed at no cost) have had peace of mine.
I have no "written authorization" with my neighbors, only an agreement for service with my Alarm company. There are more then one who do this, I have ADT, it runs about 90.00 a qtr and I do get an insurance break because of the system.
Quit stressing yourself out over something that may not happen.
Call an Alarm company and they will come out and show you what you need. Most of them install for no cost, only charge for monitoring. And if you have home damage, thats what Home Owner policies are for.
