I have an interesting scenario where I am closing on my house on 10/23.
Need a site (south Florida, Ft. Lauderdale area) for 3 months while I continiue
working.
No state parks within over an hour from me so we looked to county parks who will let you stay there six months.
Found one five miles further than I am already driving to work, but at least I got a spot for two of my three months.
Only thing is, we gotta move 3 times during that 2 months because it is booked up.
Right now we have sites for 10/21 thru 12/31/10...

We are camping out of the area over New Years and have NO idea yet where we'll be for 2010 as my job doesn't end until 1/15/10......
Snowbirds is the reason. Starting 11/1, I gotta get on it again and see where we will stay. Got 2 more of weeks of work in January and NO place to stay!

I would have no problem staying at some private campgrounds if they were true campgrounds. What I mean by that is they are businesses looking to make a profit. They permit folks to permanantly place their RVs there with lattice work, decks and even carports like a home and collect rent all year and I understand that. That is a trailer park not a campground in my book. To me a campground is a place where folks stay for a short time and than move on. That's what a Stae Park is all about. If you're looking for extended stays for the winter than a trailer park is where you should be.

$30 a night is how the county parks make you pay -
believe me - nothing cheaper here on this side of the
state than that during the winter months.

Wish I had a friends yard to stay in - rather than have to
stay anywhere like where I will be staying but with 3 more
months of work, I'll go where I gotta go, then I'm gone....

Be careful what you wish for. It may come true.

The Snow birds bring A LOT OF MONEY INTO THE STATE.

When you go camping, you might spend the same on your campsite, fuel, going out to eat, SunPass, Publix, etc. as I do, BUT, since you live in FL., you did not bring 1 cent of new money into FL.

I spend more than $10,000 in FL every winter. Make it too hard for me and I'll bring my money elsewhere.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but I'm just being realistic.

I agree the state parks need to do something to help fl residents be able to enjoy our parks during the winter months when its not so hot or so buggy. idon't want the snowbirds to feel like we're against them coming to fl after all if we were in their shoes we would want to get away from the cold weather too.but There is those of us who live here year round and are still working and have children and can't plane 11 month in advance so if they leave it the way it is we don't stand a chance yes snowbirds bring money to our much needed economy but we do live here year round spend our money here year round and pay taxes here I'm not saying one is more important then the other just that it needs to be fair for both.

Hate to tell you but it SOUNDS like Florida has already eliminated YOU as a guest It's got me also so I just go elsewhere and though I may SAY I'm doing the rejecting it's really the other way around for me too. Hate to say it but it's yet ANOTHER example of where prices are simply too low, just like in California. When supply is completely outstripped by demand prices SHOULD go up to balance them out. Good luck / Skip

State parks are not commercial enterprises. The correct response would be to limit out of state campers to a maximum percentage so state residents can access parks their taxes pay for.

The correct answer is to treat them as a commercial enterprise and make money off of that demand. This would lower that overall tax burden to residents and shift the costs to the users of the system.

Same here.

Me too! It is a good thing that I am a native here and know where to camp in Florida in summer, yeah that's right, summer camping in Florida. It is the only time we can get in, and our winter visitors can't take the heat!

You ought to try camping in Texas in the summertime. We go to Florida to cool off!

I don't know about other areas of Florida. But as a fulltime resident, I have to pay snowbird inflated prices during the winter months. Funny how menus change price when snowbirds are here and than gone. Same to get on a golf course in the winter. I pay $25.00 in summer and refuse to pay the inflated price in the winter. Our state parks are the only thing that stays steady, the private trailer parks inflate their prices in winter than beg locals to keep them in business in the summer. If I travel to another state and they have an out of state rate than I pay it or don't travel to that state. Nobody is forcing me to travel to other states just like nobody forces snowbirds to come to Florida.
