Every time I hear "pre-existing condition" I think of one of the hardest calls I ever handled. It is no small problem. Not to mention that I have four family members with asthma... 3 adolescents and one in his early fifties. But... it is still important that people know what really is at issue.

I stumbled across this on CBS news earlier...

According to the CDC, most of the children who had fatal H1N1 infections this past spring had an underlying condition. CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton reported on "The Early Show" Friday the H1N1 virus has killed more than 500 people in the U.S. And of the 36 kids who died two-thirds of them had high-risk conditions, such as epilepsy or cerebral palsy. However, she added some children with no pre-existing conditions died from a combination of H1N1 and a bacterial infection.

There was another similar article that I saw and lost that mentioned Down's syndrome, as well, and specifically talked about neurological issues/developmental issues with those kids who died of H1N1 and had other health issues. It is a different perspective and not what I'd have expected necessarily. This was of course a couple months back when the numbers were lower.

The bacterial condition they mentioned makes me wonder if it was bacteria covered by the "pneumonia" shot, which has a much higher rate of effectiveness than the flu shot and lasts for years and years. It doesn't say, but I suppose the information exists somewhere and if that is the case, then one wonders why more emphasis isn't being put on that vaccine.

I'm a old man now, and I would like to get the swine flu shot. But not before all the kids and ladies with child get theirs. When they say us old guys can have them I will be in line.
It was the first week of collage 1957 I got the Asian flu and I have never been that close to death. I was so sick, So for God sake if your child can have a swine flu shot get it.
Oh yes, In 1957 approximately 70,000 USA folks died. Don't let it be our children and Mothers to be.

Being a "first responder", ambulance jockey and firefighter, I've had my H1N1 shot and will get my flu shot next week. Just as a track record, I've been getting a flu shot for the past 12-13 years. I can be "guarenteed" a head cold for 3-4 days sometime every year, but have never had the flue. Do they work? Does for me or I'm very lucky.
Maybe I believe too much, but got my cholera and yellow fever shots when in S/E Asia, and never contracted either one. (Spent 5 years there, most of it on the economy).
Guess I just don't understand the hype for NOT getting protection/prevention.

Hey Lady, there are more kids dying from the Flu than from the vaccine. I'm over the age, over 64, so I am not able to get one, but you can bet your boots strings, I will try to get one. I don't plan on dying just yet from swine flu.

WOW!! I can't believe anyone is hesitating about getting the H1N1 Flu Vaccine for themselves or their kids. If you don't want it, send yours our way.

I live in a county with population of nearly 1 million. To date, the county, via whatever federal and state distribution system is in effect, has received ONLY 7,000 doses of the vaccine which they have distributed at several "clinics" throughout the county.

Distribution has been a debacle with most of the vaccines being given, on a first come first served basis, to people who are not even in the defined "high risk groups". For the most part, those people who got it stood in line for hours...some camping out overnight as if waiting for popular concert tickets. The VAST majority of these have been given to the ethnic/migrant population. It seems that rather than the "high risk groups", the county is primarily distributing the vaccine to the indigent and uninsured.

The "high risk groups" are defined as:

• Children 6 months to 24 years;
• Pregnant Women;
• Caregivers of children 6 months of age and younger;
• Persons with Underlying Health Conditions 24 years to 64 years; and
Health Care Workers.

My wife is an RN and vaccines have not been distributed to her or any other health care workers in the county. If, and when, they get sick, there will be no one to care for populace. The California Nurses Association (CNA) which represents nurses at her facility and many others throughout the state, was supposed to have a statewide strike yesterday over the lack of preparation by the hospitals and their failure to provide appropriate protective gear to nurses. The strike was delayed as hospital administration told them they had made changes to their contract and policies but then presented the same package worded slightly differently. It was just a bargaining ploy, to delay the strike, and nothing has changed.

There is a serious shortage of the type of masks needed to protect nurses from the aerosolized/airborne virus. If a nurse contracts TB, Hepatitis, or any other number of pathogens in the course of their employment it is treated as an "industrial injury" and the nurses sick time is covered by workman's comp. In the case of H1N1 "Swine Flue", Hospitals will not even advise a nurse if they have been exposed and, if they contract the virus, they will be expected to use their own sick and vacation leave.

If my wife gets sick, she will bring it home to our as of yet vaccinated kids and myself. My kids fall into the high risk 6 months - 24 years group and I have Underlying Health Conditions which also make me high risk....YET...none of us can get the vaccine to date.

BTW, as of the latest report, of 10/24/2009, there have been 132 hospitalized cases of Swine Flu and 9 deaths in our county.

AstroRig57, Sorry to hear your wife is unable to get the H1N1 vaccine. I feel blessed that the hospital where I work has stayed on top of things by providing both the H1N1 and seasonal flu baccine to us as health care workers first, as well as personal protective gear (N95 masks, gowns, and gloves) I've gotten both vaccines as soon as they were available. Like you say, the general population depends on health care workers to be there (and healthy). I feel it is good evidence based practice for at risk populations to have opportunity to choose the vaccine. I hope the nurses in your area are willing to create whatever stink it takes to get what they need to perform their job safely for themselves and their families.

I weighted the consequences of my dd (and baby) not having the vaccine, then presented the results to her. She got the vaccine last week, thank goodness.

Two more days and we should have a baby, stay tuned...

It has certainly been an interesting study in mass hysteria, and how easily led people really are! However, given that the "epidemic" was ready to peak last week or this week, it is probably a good time for people to calm down a little. Stress, by the way, is VERY hard on your immune system and so if you're busy freaking out because you can't get the magic potion, you're actually putting yourself at further risk for a bout with the bug.

On the other hand you could take the practical steps that will improve your immune response to anything... adequate sleep, eating some yogurt or other probiotic-laced food every day, eating your veggies, turning off the news and doing something that makes you laugh instead, getting some exercise, but being careful not to over-train. Up to you.

Mass hysteria is where the money is.
The Black Plague of the middle ages was spread by Fleas, Rats and dirty people who were ignorant about germs and cleanliness.

Have you seen some public rest rooms. Yuk.
If people keep they're home bathrooms in the same condition then I can see a spread of diseases.

I have seen Chinese people wearing masks and they do it to keep others from catching what they have, but also from catching germs from others..

The News Media is how we keep up with Local and World events, including wide spread health matters, but if they are pushing Panic for the Buck, then they lose a bit of they're credibility.

"In confusion there is Profit". And thats the name of THAT game.
