I have only been RVing for this pas year. We have a dog an am not sure what to do with her when we leave the camp ground to do anything. Most campgrounds have a rule that you can not leave you pets unattended. I have to assume that most people do not follow this rule or no one with pets would be doing anything (like going out to dinner).

Any information on this subject would be appreciated.

WOW! The OP asked for advise for their dog when leaving for awhile--what it seems they got was how terrible everyone with a dog is--ease up all.

there aren't too many places in this world that you can go without hearing a dog bark! Even in the country we hear it. If a dog is inside a trailer and barking really how loud can it be? The first time we went camping the guy next to us left his dog outside alone while he went into town, the dog barked at everything but once we were inside we couldn't even hear it. The kids playing in the playground were louder!

We have been rving 6 years and have NEVER had a problem with dogs barking in other rvs or left tied up outside in the campground. At one campground we heard a dog barking a lot at night but it was at a nearby house. I guess we've just been lucky.

The only dog that doesn't bark when left alone is the one that has been taught to meow instead.

Our dogs didn't bark when left alone and we used to leave the curtains open. But we came home one day and found two little brats banging on the windshield with a stick trying to get my dog stirred up. I wanted to let the dogs out to see if I culd coax rhem to bit the little bastids, but the DW stopped me.

After that we closed the curtains. Dogs had to suffer becasue of someone's uncontrolled little beasts.

We were staying at a lovely RV park last winter and some folks down the row had a small dog in a Class A MH. They went away and left dog. The dog would jump up into the driver seat and put front legs and paws on steering wheel, thereby sounding the horn. That went on for about an hour. Manager was there when we walked by and asked us to hold our dog up to the window to entice the honking dog to get down. It worked....for a minute, and then the dog got back up and went on honking.

I do think that folks with dogs (and we have one) think their dogs are perfect....folks that don't have dogs are always crabby about those that do.....folks that don't camp with kids are always crabby about those that do....folks that camp with kids never see the stuff their kids are doing in the campground. (Just my opinion and experiences camping for the past 22 years)

I'm sure some may disagree with our practice, but mind you, our dog is rarely left alone and if so, it's for only a few hours at a time. far less than if we were at work.

But we picked up one of the large metal kennels from walmart and keep it in the storage area underneath our queen bed. then when needed, we pull it out set it up, put food and water in it and put the dear ol pooch inside it. We used to just put her in the TT withough locked her up, but she got into stuff far to often, so we ended up having to result to the kennel. so far it works fantastic.

we also leave the vents open, turn on the fan or AC or heat depending on what the weather permits.

Not all campers with dogs think their pets are perfect as some here have stated, many just don't care. They lock them up and take off for the day. Out of site out of mind. Separation anxiety can be alleviated if you work with your pets. Put them in the camper by themselves and come right back in, next time take 30 seconds before returning, then a few minutes, etc. We know our Sheltie doesn't bark because we have stayed outside and never left. She lays down in the back and sleeps. A little radio or tv or a/c noise and it's a new world.

In 3 years of camping (approx 250 nights) we've only run across 1 barking dog (in a pop-up). I have only run across poop a few times - and this includes camping at several dog shows with 100s of dogs at them.

We leave our dogs alone occassionally. We shut the blinds, put on the fan and/or TV. We ask/beg our neighbors to let us know if there is any barking and we follow up by asking again when we return. We try to stress that we WANT to know just in case they are being polite. On return I've knocked on the camper door but still no barking (they will bark if we are there and someone knocks, but I think they are chicken if I'm not there and don't want anyone to know they are alone!)

We have not camped anywhere with the rule to not leave your dog alone but I suspect that it is there as an "escape" clause if someone has a noisy dog...

Well, just for the record, my little guy yaps his brains out every night when I leave for work. He does settle down eventually, after he's found the item he's going to destroy in order to punish me! That's why he goes in his nice little crate when I leave. And he's quiet in there. I sometimes take him in the rv, but don't take the crate. The only time I've left him alone was when I had to go inside to pay for gas. Took maybe 30 seconds, and yes he yapped his brains out...hmm....little guy might not have many brains left if he keeps that up. LOL
I don't take him if I know I'm leaving rv for sightseeing etc. I'm also a poop picker upper....after 2 kids,millions of diapers....no biggie.
