Not sure if this is the place to post but because I am in a MH, here goes

We were from MI, currently live in our MH FT and are in CA. We will be in N CA for Thanksgiving and Las Vegas for Christmas. I would love to go downhill skiing as we drive to Las Vegas, but not having ever done it before in a MH I need some advice/suggestions.

I see where some RV parks are open, (no water no sewer) but how do you safely get in/out driving the mh? Also I have never winter camped with all of our stuff in the MH so this too has me concerned.

Are there RV parks open w/ full hookups that you can drive the car to the skiing? I wouldn't mind 1 to 2 hour drive max.

I have been to Tahoe skiing before and I see where there are other CA ski resorts and they have expected opening dates in Dec, how likely are they to be open and how good is the skiing

thanks in advance

Mammoth Mountain will be opening in two days!

Most CA resorts will be open for Turkey Day.

Good luck.

Lot of resorts will let you park overnight if you buy ski ticket.
I did it in Boreal and Sugar Bowl years ago.
You still need to be ready to survive the night. The temperatures don't usually go too low in the area and even with older motorhome having uninsulated tanks I didn't have freeze problem. Don't think you will find any RV park open unless you go to Reno.
Mamoth is much better ski resort, but I never took RV there.

Eric, There are several ski areas in the Lake Tahoe area, Squaw Valley Kirkwood, Northstar, Heavenly and a few smaller ones. As far as camping you would have to google the areas and ask about winter camping.

Further South is June and Mammoth Maountains about a half hour apart. There is one campground in Mammoth Lakes that is open in the winter, it is Mammoth RV Park. You can google them for info. Try DiscoverMammoth.com for more info on the town and area. The site owner is an RVer and often posts on these forums so you coud take his pen name off the site and search for it on the forum and PM him for more info. It is about two blocks from the RV part to the free shuttle around town and to the ski area. This is really better than driving.

The big problem in getting in and out is of course the weather, the roads in both areas are plowed but chains are often required. The roads in the RV park are plowed as needed and I would call for reservations.

You can always go all the way to Bishop and stay in a campground there and drive your car back up north to Mammoth (39 miles). Then you wouldn't have to worry about most of the "really cold" weather prep.

I've skied June Mountain when there were several motorhomes parked in the parking lot over night, at the base of the mountain.

I don't know if they were there with permission, or what the current policy is. You could contact the various resorts and learn their policies.

As far as June Mountain was concerned there shouldn't be a problem getting a motorhome in and out on the highways. The Ski tour busses have been running in there for years.

Here's the link to the June Mountain RV Camp, I don't know how much of the year they are open.

Sugar Bowl is within easy distance of Auburn. Leave the motorhome at the Gold Country RV park and drive the dinghy (bring chains) to the ski areas around Donner Lake.

Zephyr Cove Rv Resort and Tahoe Valley campground are both open year round. I do not know their hookup status. All the lake tahoe ski resorts can be accessed from either of these campgrounds. Zephyr Cove also has snowmobile rentals on location.

try crowley lake rv park, lower than mammoth so you shouldn't have as much snow.we've stayed at mammoth mountain rv a bunch of times in winter.
Check out the winter camping thread.

I stayed in Verdi NV at http://www.goldranchrvcasino.com/ January-March 2008. The water pipe was insulated and heated and we had no problems with it freezing. Propane is available at the RV park and they also have a gas station at the casino.

One note, I-80 is (finally) getting some much needed repair work done. Depending one where you stay it might be an issue. I have read they have some sections down to one lane and only 11' wide. Check CalTrans website for more info.
