Hi.
I want to import a travel trailer from Michigen.
Does anybody know if I have to pay any taxes in Michigen? I understand that I have to pay PST and GST in Canada, but I am not sure if I have to pay anything in Michigen when I transfer the ownership.
Thanks,
Blaf.

If you are buying from a dealer, they should have the answer to the question. I would have the discussion with several dealers to determine if there is a consensus. As regards the GST, if you purchase PRIVATELY in Canada there would be no GST exigible. I would be pursuing that line of reasoning in the event the purchase in the US is PRIVATE.

Thank you Vic.
I am buying privately.
How I understand it, regardless you buy from a dealer or privately you have to pay both taxes in Canada.
GST at the border when you import the trailer and PST later on when you register it.
But I am not sure about any taxes in Michigen. I know that in Ohio and NY there is no tax if you transfer a vehicle to a Canadian citizen.

This is correct.
Regarding paying Michigan sales tax if it is a private sale for sure no sales tax, if it was from a dealer, you would have to check with them, but as a general rule, when an RV is sold to someone out of state, no sales tax are collected by the dealer.

I checked the MI government website for out of state purchasers & nothing came up. You might want to check this out & call before you leave:

Thanks a lot guys.
I have just called them. If I am not going to register the trailer in Michigen I do not need to pay any taxes. So I am OK. Just GST and PST here in Canada.

If the unit in under ten years old, you also need a letter from the mfg stating that all safety recalls on the unit have been performed. I called about this one time and the mfg knew the drill as these requests were common.

This brings up one question. If you are buying in Michigan, and NOT going to register it there, how are you going to tow this across the border without any registration or tags on the trailer? That would likely throw up some red flags with customs on both sides of the fence!!

Very good question. I don't believe you can register it here until you've imported it, but can't tow it on the road unless it's already licensed. If the friendly local law enforcement pulls you over, they are unlikely to just accept this situation for what it is and let you carry on.

If dealers can get temporary license tags for demonstration drives, then temporary tags are part of the system.
Answer is with state, ie. Dept. of Motor Vehicles, or equivalent.
