I am planning a trip into Mexico next year and would like to be able to speak some conversational Spanish. I have traveled into S. America twice so am not totally unfamiliar with the language.
I would appreciate some recommendations on a self-teaching course, either on-line, pc based, or CD based.

Go to Wallyworld and prowl the discount software bins for Berlitz. Its the best I have found. You don't need the absolute latest revision, Spanish hasn't changed all that much in the last 2 years.

Rosetta Stone has the option of buying the Cd's or subscribing on line. I do their online course and have already taken German and am now doing their Latin American Spanish course. They also have a European Spanish course. Be careful of store bought Spanish discs - they're usually European Spanish. Rosetta Stone courses are highly rated and I recommend them.

Marry a Colombian! Well, maybe not the best solution, but it has worked for me.

Probably not the cheapest but the most fun: get a Mexican girlfriend. Don't let your wife know, though.

We think Destinos LINK
We enjoyed the story so much that we forgot it was a teaching tool.

I use Destino's also, but still couple it with the "Rocket Spanish" Course, which is rated next best to Rosetta Stone for on-line paid courses.I just did a blog post on it today.Link
If you only want an inexpensive book,I highly recommend "Spanish for Gringos",it is excellent for basic conversation.
