While surfing the forum I came across something on water heaters and developed a question. I have a water heater; brand does not matter, which has the plastic drain plug. I’ve seen the heaters with anode rods and they have a metal plug with the rod attached. Does that mean the heaters with the plastic plugs do not need an anode rod or do I need to change mine from the plastic to metal? If a rod is not required what takes its place?

You have an Atwood water heater...no anode rode needed... stick with the nylon plug and get on down the road.

Not all water heaters require an anode rod. Mine doesn't - and I have a metal plug. Without knowing the brand of heater you have, the rest of the answer is just speculation.

Atwood water heaters use a nylon plug. They have an aluminum tank. Sould not use plastic, steel or brass plug.
Suburban water heaters use an anode. They have a glass lined steel tank.

By using a metal plug instead of the plastic is an excellent way to cause electrolysis(sp) due to the dissimilar metals and ruin your tank. Stick with the plastic plug with aluminum tanks.

I use an ordinary white CPVC plug. Works fine, and they're available almost anywhere that handles plumbing supplies for about fifty cents.

WHY? Glass will not carry current and will not erode.
