Technology does change thing but we are not changing with it. Just graduating from high school with no long suffice. The new jobs of today and especially the new jobs of tomorrow will require certain skills not included in a high school diploma.
Parents are not doing their job making sure that their kids get these skills through college or tech school primary because of the cost.
Unless one makes millions, one can no longer have numerous kids and have the financial where all to pay for these new requirements in the new job market in the USA. The days of only a high school diploma making a middle income salary in a factory are over. They know longer exists and they are not coming back. The sooner parents discover AND accept this, the sooner we will get through this. However, I am afraid this will not happen in the near future. This will cause a greater degree of separation between the "Haves" and the "Have Nots" which will cause more unbalance in our country.

Here's a scary thing for me. I'm 43 years old. If I would have been single and used up all of my unemployment and I did not find a job and could not afford rent or house payment. I would have had to move in with my parents.
I'm thinking about another degree but I'm not sure what I want to do. If I could figure out what I want to do and some one was willing to pay for my schooling I go back to school.

No disrespect intended, but I've heard this many time from IT people, and if he's in IT without a job for that long, then there's something else stopping him from getting one (typically because people are unwilling to move, but they blame the market instead of themselves). There are, and have been plenty of jobs out there, especially for IT people.
Heck, I was recruited for and accepted a new job AND bought a house AND 2 new cars is this supposed economic disaster and so-called recession. And I am a Senior Information Technology Specialist. I have a Bachelor's in Computer Information Systems, and manage a Software Support Helpdesk.
For one, has he gone to dice.com? It is THE place geared to finding jobs in the IT field.
Two: TheLadders.com has many, many, many jobs worth over 100K for IT techs around the country/globe.
Three, even the CIA (at cia.gov)is hiring IT people, to wit:
Information Management
Knowledge and Information Management Officer - Developmental and Full Performance
Information Review and Release Officer - Developmental and Full Performance
Information Technology:
Applications Development:
Applications Developer
Computer & Telecommunications Support:
Computing Services Manager - Mid Level and Senior
Customer Service & Information Technology Officer - Entry and Developmental
Customer Service & Information Technology Officer - Full Performance
Information Systems:
Information Systems Security Officer
Telecommunications Information Systems:
Engineering Specialist
So if he wants an IT job, they are out there. He has no more excuses about the market. Don't know if that helps, but I hope so.

It seems the only safe jobs are to be on some sort of government-sponsored job, pension or retirement. All others are at risk - and even governemnt pensioners may get downsized in their benefits when municipalities, counties, states have to re-organize or go bankrupt because they cannot meet their promised obligations. There's just less money in circulation, and downsizing is continuing at every level I've heard about. At least that's some of the view I've noticed recently.
I have a sweet tender nature, however I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions.

I found this interesting as I work for the same company and the CEO has stated 'no layoffs' unless absolutely necessary. We have neither seen or heard of any company wide.

Even the cashier jobs are at risk with many stores going to self-serve check outs. I refuse to use them. the prices are the same so I figure I'm helping keep someones job.

I feel the same way. Maybe just a small way to, hopefully, save a job. There are 2 Wal-Marts within 5 miles of me. BOTH have redone their checkouts and no longer have the self-checkout registers. Don't know why, but I have always wondered how many people "forget" to scan items.

When I decided to get an outside job, I called our local school bus company (they're always looking for drivers at the beginning of the year), and they faxed me an application (which I immediately filled out and faxed back, along with my resume), and had an interview the next day. I was "hired," but it depended on my ability to pass the tests I needed to pass to drive a school bus. As most folks here know, I'm now driving the bus, so obviously, I passed! I never thought I'd be driving a school bus, but then again, I never thought we'd be in the position we're in right now.
I guess it takes a willingness to change. Do something different. If you need a job NOW, going to school isn't going to help NOW, because that's something for the future. Get the "menial" job and go to school at night if you need the money. It's really quite simple.
If you need a job NOW, then you shouldn't be looking down your nose at "menial" labor. Do what you have to do to survive, whether it's flipping burgers or bagging groceries, or working at the photocopy center at the big law firm in your area.
The problem is that too many folks think that some jobs are "beneath" them. Believe me, I've noticed the look I get from some folks when I tell them I'm driving a school bus. Frankly, it takes more guts, determination and courage to drive a school bus than many other jobs out there, and to be honest, I don't give a rat's behind what other people think.
I'd rather be driving a school bus and paying my mortgage, than whining about not having a job or the money to pay my mortgage.
