I was in Illinois this weekend and was talking to my brother that drives an 18 wheeler, he said that January 1, 2010 the 55 mph speed limit for trucks and RV and anything pulling a trailer on the interstates will go to 65mph. Cars will still be at 65 mph.

Wonder why? We'll still be driving at 55-60.

They finally got around to eliminating what was a misguided law right from the start. Actually an amazingly intelligent move given the current level of (in)competence in Springfield.

Most traffic safety experts will tell you that speed differential is more of a contributing factor to accidents than actual speed levels. Having two classes of vehicles with different speed limits is just inviting trouble.

Now, if they would just catch on to the fact that most traffic is traveling safely at 70-75 MPH and put in some reasonable limits we would really have something. And while I'm on my soap box, I'll mention the ridiculous 45 MPH construction zone limits that go on mile after mile when there is no actual work being done.

PS: I may run at 80 in my four wheeler, but the truck and fiver always run between 62 and 65.

Don't avoid all of Illinois... just the greater Chicagoland area where you get to pay hefty tolls to drive thru construction zones and madhouse traffic, trying to guess which lane will be the one that will accept cash this time... it's not always left, right or middle....
The open roads outside of the city are beautiful, and the prairie scenery and farmlands are wonderful. We just avoid Chicago when possible.

I'm glad they are changing the speed limit. It's 70 in Indiana and 70 in Iowa, and then passing through Illinois is like ... well ... another planet! Glad to see the change!

Anyone who ever worked in a construction zone, like I have, appreciate folks slowing to 45 mph. I also hate the restrictions where no work is being performed but Illinois is hardly the only state where that happens.

This is good to see! We visited Carlyle Lake last year for the first time, and 55 mph across the flats of Illinois is just too slow. 65 mph across those flatlands is an improvement IMO.

I never had a problem going 65 in Illinois with the trailer or when I drove semis.Construction zones when open and workers present, the fine is not high enough for speeding.Would hate to work in one.On a side note,Christmas day in Ohio a few years back in a construction zone, they had over 10 cops pulling over cars going over 40 mph by Columbus.

that is good news for this IL resident. However I will not drive any faster.

If one noticed, you don't have to drive 55 with the camper in IL. I judge my speed by how fast the police allow the semis to run. They have been runing thru the radar at just under 65 for eons.
