If you have DTV:
When the receiver starts up it will have a white screen and "searching for satellite" message. When the screen turns black "still searching for signal" you can select EXIT then press Menu, parental faves and set up, system setup, satellite set up, repeat set up then just follow instructions.

On your receiver, you have a set up menu, you should find all that on there.

Assuming you have a Dish network system - on the remote - press menu, then 6,1,1
This puts you in the setup - find satellite mode. use the left-right buttons to get to "zip code' and enter your numbers. This will give you the diretcion (azimuth0 to point the dish, and the elevation (tilt for the dish. If you have a dish 500 or better you also must 'twist' the dish to the number shown as 'skew'. Then adjust the whole dish slowly, back and forth and up and down until the colored bar at the borrom of the screen turns to green and the tone changes. Now you have found the satellite(s). go to 'check switch' and wait until it finishes the necessary checks. Then exit the setup menu and push the 'guide' button and select whatever channel you want to watch.
Hope this is clear and helpful.

Hint: Set-up will always go much faster if you very carefully level your tripod first.
